Found a way BACK to Yahoo Mail Classic!

After being blocked with the upgrade or else with the yahoo mail today, I've found a relatively painless way to access via the classic menu - not sure how long they will keep this door open though.

Go to »my.yahoo.com ; in the Personal Assistant box click on Mail. If you don't have a box with mail you can choose options and select on to be Mail. Then hover over the Mail envelope and you'll see your emails. Click on one and voila, it brings you straight into classic interface.

»us.mc817.mail.yahoo.com/mc/welcome

that link should restore it to classic

Really, they forced you to upgrade today?? In our recent thread on this topic here, I mentioned that I figured they would eventually force the issue, but I haven't seen this one yet and didn't think it would be THIS soon.

What they tried to force me to do today was give them my cell phone number. I understand the potential benefit of that to the user who is locked out of his own account due to hijacking or a forgotten password, but I'm not sure I trust Yahoo with my cell phone number despite their promises not to use it for marketing. I punted. I could always give them a dial-a-prayer number, and then if I get locked out my account, they can call in the new password to the Rev. Foghorn Leghorn.

Yup, I was forced on one account today when I logged in.

I have three accounts, one I upgraded about a month ago, I gave up with two using the "new", I just went ahead and upgraded the third one. Now I am 100% "new" Yahoo!

They never tried to get my cell. I am not gonna give it to them if they ask. Don't do Internet on my cell phone, strictly text and calls.

Didn't work for me, came up with the "new". I'm OK what that. I didn't like Yahoo! Classic either.

Just a thought for you yahoo mail users,

instead of the web interface and dealing with trying to get to classic mode, why not set up outlook or thunderbird to get your yahoo mail. No need to constantly go to the site, log in, deal with the web interface changing etc..

Just open your mail client and have the emails come right in.

That would be nice, but I thought you need POP access to make that work. And my understanding is that it is only available in the paid versions.

And why you get that for free in g-mail but not yahoo mail is beyond me. Seems to be if yahoo wanted more email to scan (ummm read and plaster you with unwanted ads) they would want as much traffic as possible going through their emails.

Not all Yahoo! Mail accounts have POP3 access. All three of mine do, but as of two days ago they all stopped working, time outs.

It does, but it's only temporary for me. It ends up going back to the new one eventually. I'm getting used to the new interface anyway. So it really not an issue for me.

I use the free yahoo mail and outlook.

You do need to go into the advnced email settings on the yahoo page and look for the options to set your home country. Set it to ASIA, some others may work as well but I only tried Asia.

Once you do this the all the settings to enable pop access become available and you can then link it to a mail client program.

Actually to be more specific you need to FIRST go to "my yahoo" and choose account settings in this area and make the change to "language, site, and time zone". I specifically set mine to Asia.

Once this is done then you can go into the yahoo mail settings and you will find that POP forwarding is available to you,, even in the free version.

Thanks BoulderHill1. So now that there is POP forwarding, how does one access the yahoo mail with Outlook? Or were you saying to simply POP forward to an existing Outlook account?

To access with Outlook you will need these settings (and assuming you already know how to set up outlook).

Incomming mail server is POP.MAIL.YAHOO.COM
Incoming port is 995
Check box for SSL
Do not check box for (SPA) secure Password Authentication

Outgoing mail server is SMTP.MAIL.YAHOO.COM
Outgoing port is 465
Check box for SSL

Of course you will also need to plug in your account user ID and password in to the appropriate fields.

These same settings can be used with Thunderbird or other email client programs.

Iv'e been using the free yahoo email with outlook and thunderbird for years and years this way and has always worked great.

I never access ANY email via a web interface.

Thanks again. That's awesome to learn. Is it also possible to access several different yahoo mails from the same PC/Outlook? Seems like there might need to reconfigure each time.

Outlook can be configured with multiple accounts.
Click Tools>Email Accounts>add new account and input the proper credentials.

I actually have my outlook set up to recieve two yahoo accounts, two gmail accounts, My paid ISP account and a hotmail account.

This way I just need to open one program and I get all my emails from all these sources in just one place.

I then further set up rules and folders to direct specific emails such as subscriptions or dialy updates to be delivered to an apropriately named folder to keep things organized.

Also as an added bonus with having the spam filters turned on at the websites none of that crap ends up in outlook.

Thanks again. Sorry for all the questions, but one more. if you don't mind Can you have multiple PCs (using Outlook from each) that access the same yahoo mail account? And trade off which PC accesses the email several times a day?

Yes you can. I also do this same thing.

However you must check the box that says "leave a copy of messages on server". this can be found on the advanced tab of the email settings in outlook. Do this on each PC you plan to use outlook for yahoo.

If this box is not checked, then when that PC connects to the yahoo server it will move all the mail from the server and into outlook leaving the inbox on the server (yahoo web inbox) empty. Then when one of the other PC's you have set up tries to get the mail there will be nothing in the inbox.

Once your region is set to Asia, you can also gain IMAP access to Yahoo mail, not just POP. Thunderbird has all the settings for this in their account setup wizard, which makes it quite easy to get it working.

I've managed to get two accounts to pop - thank you. But now what happens is that both of them come to the same Outlook and everything get's mixed in together. Is there a way in which to keep them segregated so that they messages popped from different accounts don't merge in the same Outlook view? And then I move from view to view looking at different accounts, etc.

Other observations: it would appear that only @yahoo.com emails are poppable or at least @ymail.com are not. There is no setting option for this. In fact, in a regular @yahoo account, there is a POP navigation that you can click and it says order the plus mail. But in ymail, there is no such thing that I could find.

Another observation, it takes a while to get this to work. Even after I got the "test connection" to pass, I still had to manipulate other settings to get things going. Not terrible, but requires persistence.
