1 edit | increase your Internet speed Good morning
Congrats to any of gwi's consumers who got a speed increase.
"Dear GWI Customer, Recently, we sent a note to thank you for your business and let you know that as a token of our appreciation for your continued support, we would increase your Internet speed at no additional cost sometime between July 1 and August 31, 2011. We also promised to let you know by email when your connection had been upgraded. As promised, this email is to let you know that your upgrade is complete and you should now be enjoying faster speeds. There is absolutely no catch, no gimmick, and nothing for you to do or remember - just enjoy a faster connection on us! Please bear in mind that the actual performance of your new faster connection will vary according to how far your home is from GWI's equipment in your local telephone company central office. If you have any questions at all, please take a look at this press release on our web site or call 1-866-494-2020. Thanks for being a GWI customer and for supporting Maine businesses. Sincerely,"

 | reply to braynes From Portland, ME: My service got bumped up from 3 Mbps to 7 Mbps; my actual measured speed went from just about 3 Mpbs to around 6 Mbps (it varies by a tenth or two either way). I'm about a mile from the main TelCo switching station in downtown Portland, and seem to have a good, reliable connection.
After optimizing the RWIN setting in Windows XP for the faster speed, my maximum file download speed seems to be just over 700 KB/sec. from servers that can support it (not many); average is more in the 300 to 500 KB/sec. range. For what I'm paying, I'm happy! But with DSL, being located right downtown definitely helps. |

 | reply to braynes The speedtest you used isnt the best, its flash for a start, its also located in Chicago. Best off using speedtest.net and using a local sever. Added tests to Portland and Bangor server.

This is the best it will do, as a point of intrust testing a unit that is a few rr apart then the dslam is not a valid test, in the real world we go to sites not tests that not in gwi office.
Glad you like them so much worked there long? bruce
edit to show the speed test that appears to be magic to some of the fans. |

 | Real world tests for me are fine, and no I dont work for GWI wish I did though lol. All I care about in a connection is stability, speed and price. I recently came back to GWI from RR as cable in my area is awful.
I use speedtest.net because its the most local to me, its common knowledge that with any connection with distance comes latency and with increased latency comes a drop off in speed. So to get your connections fastest possible speed you need the closest speedtest which to me is the Bangor server on speedtest.net.
Now as far as your below par speeds can you post your modem stats on here so we can take a look at the attenuation and noise margins? It will give us a good look at to whats going on with your line and will give you something to work with when you contact tech support. |

I was hopping for at least 10... 15 would have been nice. Oh well, Ill just drop down to the 7Mbps tier and save a few bucks. |

 | reply to astokes GWI Customers, Thank you for your feedback about the speed upgrade we completed in your area. Many of our customers are enjoying a faster speed, post upgrade, as a result. In areas of Maine, where we provide service, greater than 80% of internet customers are now enjoying a higher speed - some are experiencing slightly higher speeds while others are seeing much greater speeds. As you alluded to, the distance from the central office plays a very important role in the speed that the line is able to attain.
If you have any questions or concerns about your speed or service, please don't hesitate to call Technical Support on 866 494-2020.
As always, we appreciate your business.

Support is like the old "take two aspirin and call me in the morning"
They say my pair(cable pair) is crap, they have changed it but maintain crap. The splice closure is open at one end (see pic in other post) fairpoint says so what, still at my specs and distance according to asdl2+ stranded I should be doing better but over 2 years ans still no improvement,I now use dsl as a back up and cable for normal use.I'll post my specs for you. bruce

 | Looking at your line stats you are quite a distance from the CO. Going by your attenuation you are lucky to be syncing as high as you do, if you had those stats on Fairpoint they would give you 3meg Max. Are there any remote terminals closer than the CO to you? Fairpont really need to clean your line up. Good luck. |

Guy Cadorette Customer Support Manager GWI Would that 80% be in Portland and Bangor? as the 25 or 30 people I have spoken have not seen and great increase, and I would like perhaps to see some one list the Magic 20Mg speed,on a real test, not on that goes from my modem to you test circuit, I like everyone of you costumers go to sites that are on other networks so test to teal city's in varies places give a real world speed not that PHONY up to speed defalcation.I will say you must have a good sense of humor. about 9000ft from CO
My connection is about 1mbps or so faster than it was before. I think my line previously had been set to sync at a lower rate since at one point I was having problems with the modem losing sync. I've since retired the problematic Westell 6100 modem and replaced it with a Zoom 5715 and it's very stable. Another issue with the Westell was that it frequently dropped when there was lightning within about 25 miles or so... Ridiculous. |

braynesPremium join:2005-03-14 Waterville, ME | I have a zoom as well, Before that I used D-link never had any luck with there modems, but yes the zoom is great, Mine is an ADSL XV6, I have not use a isp modem and I went on cable in 92,than was a dlink back then.
