sleuthPremium join:2001-08-30 West Des Moines, IA 1 edit | Italian Beef Recipe So who has a good at home recipe? I moved out of the area a few months ago and I cannot find a decent one to match up against Al's (the one on Taylor), Mr Beef, Johnnie's, hell even Portillo's.
I googled a few recipes but I want to hear from the real locals. What's your choice of meat? Rub? Beef bouillon or beef stock? Lets hear it!
I need this to get me through Sunday football otherwise it's just not the same. |

 | Thats one of the advantages of living in Chicago, so many good beef joints here. So why have a home recipe? |

 | reply to sleuth I used to work at a beef joint and the owner knew what he was doing. He insisted that the key was in brewing up a dense stock from the drippings of numerous beef roasts, with seasonings, and cooking it down until it had an intense beef flavor. Then he used this as the basis of his gravy, which he would serve the beef from. It was very good, but also very impractical for home use. Here are some ideas, good luck:

Where did you move too? I had a boss who was from Ohio and couldn't believe it when he told me he had never even heard of Italian Beef until he moved here. WTF? |

Seriously...it even freezes well so you can make a batch and then enjoy it for the next couple of months. |

Ahhh moved to Des Moines, IA. We're expecting our first in 2 days now haha and wanted to be close to family. I was raised in the northshore my whole life and my family relocated to Naperville. Given the option, we couldn't feasibly afford to live out there on my salary alone so I said I'd consider Des Moines where her family is. Long story short, found a house on our first trip out here and moved.
Man do I miss all the good food. I don't know what's worse, that or not having regularly televised Bears games. Thank god for Sunday ticket. |

Don't know about shipping. Go through the check out and see. |

The newest addition to the household! Natalie Grace arrived this past Wednesday at 9:00 am. Totally off topic but it's my thread! The reason we moved closer to the wife's family and I can no longer get easy beef sandwiches
I'm going to test out a recipe this Saturday for the start of the Hawkeye season. Let's hope it goes well and tastes good! |

 | Hard to do but looks like you got something better than a good beef. |
