DNS Hijacking

quote:
Manipulation by ISPs

A number of consumer ISPs such as Cablevision's Optimum Online,[2] Comcast,[3] Time Warner, Cox Communications, RCN,[4] Rogers,[5] Charter Communications, Verizon, Virgin Media, Frontier Communications, Bell Sympatico,[6] UPC,[7] T-Online,[8] Optus,[9] Mediacom,[10], ONO[11] and Bigpond (Telstra)[12][13][14][15] use DNS hijacking for their own purposes, such as displaying advertisements[16] or collecting statistics. This practice violates the RFC standard for DNS (NXDOMAIN) responses,[17] and can potentially open users to cross-site scripting attacks.[16]

Though I found a way to supposedly opt out of this "feature," when did OOL start with this?

oops, nothing new apparently, but I looked at this article and became concerned:

»Optimum Online Now Using DNS Redirection [40] comments

You are confusing 2 issues here.
dns hijacking that cablevision is doing is when you type in a non-existing domain.
What that article is talking about is when ISP actually before allowing you to get to google/bing redirect you through their referral/commissions page.
