[speed/latency] Help! Ultra slow service

Hello, let me explain my situation and what I know.
I pay for 1.5mbps dsl service from fairpoint.I am in the brocton ny area and my service only gets 768k(70kbps). It never drops or disconnects but this is too slow for today's internet things(stuff I do)

I dont live in a completely rural area and im not too far from the fiberoptics. There is a sizeable white box down the road that the tech told me is the problem. my question is, what is it? their seems to be a fiber optic line going into it and im maybe a half mile from this thing and i still get .768k dsl speeds.
If fairpoint cannot fix this, what would you guys reccomend i do? I need something that allows me faster speed than .768 and we dont have cable in this area

Welcome to BBR.

First step is to find our what speed the modem is syncing. Check modem stats.

Here in Fairpoint ex Verizon land the 1.5/768 and 3/768 package is the same price. 768 is the cheaper entry level package. If you have 1.5 it is either due to a mistake or your line will not support higher speed.

Once you know what the sync speed is run speedtest (speedtest.net or the tools page here). Assuming your DSL connection is PPPoE (username/pw) speed test should be close to 85% or your sync speed.

Have you called FairPoint to see what speeds you are eligible for?

As far as other ISPs what about Cable?

ADSL is asymmetric, download is faster then upload. Which direction is syncing at 768kbps. If you have the 1500/384 package your sync speed should be 1792/448. Post your modem stats is you want to discuss the problem.

So have you called Fairpoint about getting higher speed?

I told them if not, im going to wildblue, my only other option.....its sad because theres cable about a mile down the road..at least ill be able to get 200kbps a second rather than a crappy 70 and then ill just have to deal with the latency issues

Ok, heres what they did and it didn't work so im having to call back tommorow and talk to a supervisor again. They came out and replaced my wiring and said that was the problem, but guess what? Still 768k dsl. I called the techs and they were supposed to call me back but didnt so they are getting called again tommorow. This service is utter crap and they should really get with the 21st century, 2012 is coming internet speeds where if you have 768k dsl you cannot do anything on the internet that involves video or downloads!
