Hurricane Irene

Time for a nice Carribean vacation.
I guess it's about time we started a thread on Irene. In the last few hours Irene has show signs of getting her act together, first with a nice burst of convection, followed by rapid circulation development.
Still if she follows projected tracks she will spend a great deal of time bouncing from island to island. That should keep her below hurricane status.

Hello Puerto Rico
As of now it looks like she is goiing to drop into Puerto Rico later this evening. How she comes off there will determine which way her path will shift. She is very well defined for a tropical storm. If she was in open water I would expect rapid intensification.

We could really use that rain here in Texas.

The 11PM update has her tracking more to the east, just along the east coast of Florida.

Just have to wait and see.. Right now she's in a critical spot, how she navigates Puerto Rico, will likely determine her future. She just took out the PR radar, so we can't get a close in look at what she's doing.. (sneaky one that Irene) Satellite tends to indicate that she might be going along the south coast of the island. If she does that expect the track to shift westward (sorry Hayward).

Have friends living on Vieques not been a nice day as she is just crawling... power gone, and plenty of wind and rain.

Re: Hurricane Irene

This morning it's looking like Irene wobbled back to the North side of PR, so her track seems to be about the same. As always any small changes in her turn can make large changes in the path.

Also she is now officially a hurricane, and was gaining strength while partially over land, including mountains.

Looking better for Floridians ... not so much further up the coast.

Since she's not going to be tracking across the mountains of Hispaniola and Cuba, the intensity forecast is much stronger now, a strong Cat 3 when makes landfall near Charleston.

The 2PM update still keeps her on track for a Saturday Morning arrival on the South Carolina coast.

I really wish they would put a 1 to 5 in the graphic vs. the whole "H" or "M" thing.

I don't look at the NWS site any longer, it's not very user friendly.

Also the WU's site has the computer models with the SHIPS intensity model as well.
