 Land fall |
That Radar is still hanging in there at 7:50 AM.. The storm is almost right on top of it.
Seeing lots and lots of rain, almost 10" in NC North of the current center location, with more to come!
Also looks Like Land fall at Harkers Island NC. |

| reply to SmokChsr At the Hatteras monitoring station, water levels and air pressure have dropped sharply since midnight. Wind gusts are approaching hurricane strength.

New York City storm surge estimates quote: The M.I.T. team has done more surge simulations using other scenarios for the track of Hurricane Irene and finds some very bad outcomes are possible (up to 10 feet at the Battery). »dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/···-charts/ -- Follow your dreams, except the one where you're naked in church. |

HIS.TRIONICS Channel You think that's bad? Pfffttt... It Could, And IS, Worse....
With Corey Johnson's hyped cheap Ken Nordine Voice Of Gravitas reading a scare script liberally peppered with references to "monster", "killer", "violent", "death", "destruction", "startling", "catastrophic", "horror", "hell", "nightmare", the History Channel's "How The Earth Was Made" series has people all over the planet crappen' their shorts: Just be thankful you don't live in, or any where around, lets say Naples, Italy, for starters:
or Hawaii, or the Alps, Iceland, or Yellowstone, or 200 miles of the coast of California, or of ANY coast, or, or _ANYWHERE_ON_EARTH (VOLCANOES!!!! ASTEROIDS!!!) ...
It's a shame that the histrionics of fear are such a wholesale part of the series which is otherwise very informative and visually stunning.
For the most part, it seems people responded sanely to this risk event (except for the huge part of the continuing failure to really learn and address the big stuff: systems/infrastructure inadequacies...).
Here, in SE Florida, we batted another one away, with the surfers enjoying Irene's waves. I hope everyone else weathers this event unharmed. |

Re: Although the segment is peppered with "doomsday" verbiage and ominous drumbeat music, there's a takeaway - have plans in place to meet a hurricane of the 1938 level.
Based on what I've been following so far, the planning and management response has been reasonable and conservative. NHC and NOAA have done excellent IMO.
The biggest irritation about coverage I've experienced has been from TV reporters who have been tasked with filling up time slots with extraneous and sometimes circus-like antics.
The Eric Fisher live report puts that in perspective, though. (He will definitely be the "butt" of jokes for some time! )
BTW, what did Eric put on his hair to keep it in place - 90W gear lube???" -- Follow your dreams, except the one where you're naked in church. |

Re: Hurricane Irene With rain fall in the foot range in some areas there is serious flooding going on from NC on up through the New England states.
It looks like Irene did far more damage inland with floods, than she did along the coast.
As for now what's left of here are up in Canada still spreading rain. There is also an interesting anticyclonic feature setting up in the Atlantic between Irene and the remains of Jose at 43N 55W.
