[General] SipBri: How to make GV calls from any ATA

I found about this service on another forum and I am surprised it is not mentioned here. SipBri.com bridges SIP to GV, allowing you to make GV calls from any ATA or softphone. Basically it works like this:
1. Enter in SipBri the MAC address of your ATA.
2. Register your GV account in SipBri.
3. Configure route.
4. Wait 15 minutes and configure your ATA with SipBri's SIP credentials.

That is all and it works great to make free calls to US and Canada using GV. All calls must start with 1 (1-xxx-xxx-xxxx). I have this working beautifully with a 3CX Windows PBX. SipBri's website is not great, but their free service just works.

Very interesting and thanks for sharing.

I just created an account. However, I am still hesitant to give out my GV password to SIPBri, ATM.

I had the same concern, but then I thought that I was doing the same thing with SipSorcery. Since my GV number is associated with an email account that uses a different password than GV, all they can do with my GV credentials is make calls on Google's dime.

You are right; however, at least the owner of SIPSorcery's seemed to have established his/her credentials very well (at least on this forum). Honestly, I don't mind to just create another GV account to test this. However, if SipBri owner(s) want to harvest GV credentials with GV DID#, then they would have succeeded if everyone registers to SipBri with a new GV account. I will have to play with the wait-and-see situation.

That particular website just started in May.

However, it seems to be a project of Remac Services, a Chicago software services company around since 2007.

For those concerned with security, and while you still can, you could create a =new= GV account/DID/PW and use it to test the free calling goodness...

(Nevermind -- Mazilo already suggested this, although I don't agree that SipBria would have succeeded in anything fantastic if it ended up harvesting a bunch of new, test DIDs and credentials...)

I signed up for this (with a new GV account created just for this purpose) yesterday morning and it didn't work, although everything appeared to be configured properly. Opened a trouble ticket with them, and it was responded to promptly this morning. They said that new accounts had been disabled over the weekend.

My sipbri connection configured on my Asterisk switch is now able to make outgoing calls. Set up was very easy and straightforward, call quality so far seems to be very good with normal VOIP latency (tested using 1-909-390-0003 echo test).

This should be good while it lasts...

Ditto, i waited all day yesterday for my ATA to register and after reading Adam's post decided to email their support also. Very prompt response also. Had I checked my ATA i would have seen that it had already registered. Can't wait to get home to try this out tonight. I love asterisk but i sure would love to turn that thing off and reduce my power usage a bit.

Can you register more than one SIP device to use with this service?

(aka, a gigaset and a polycom)

Wouldn't it be a waste to have SipBri if your asterisk is already supporting GV?

I run an older Asterisk which doesn't have outgoing GV capability.

You must have a very old Asterisk. I had an Asterisk 1.4.x setup with perfectly working outgoing GV. The kludgy kind, with the parking lot, but it worked just fine...

I do have Asterisk 1.4.something. But I thought the GV outgoing feature was part of Asterisk 1.8. In any event, configuring the older Asterisk to access GV via SipBri couldn't have been easier, and so far, is working great.

Glad SipBri works well!

GV outgoing was "improved" in Asterisk 1.8 -- made to work more like a VOIP trunk -- but there was a way to make it work with 1.4 for a long time. If you are ever interested in the background and have time on your hands, search through the Nerdvittles.com website for how.

I wonder why they ask for the MAC address rather than just allowing you to get sip credentials?

I have used the sip credentials on multiple devices and it works on all of them without providing a MAC address.

Otherwise, the service appears to work. I dont always get ringback, but thats a minor issue, and one that I have seen with other providers as well.

A website eventually must have some income. How will SipBri make money? Selling ATAs?

MAC address is for customers that bought pre-configured device from sipbri. All other "SIP only" users can generate account and receive sip credentials without providing MAC address.

Arek, this is your service, if I am not mistaken.
