 | Loading New IOS image to c1841Hello guys,
I am trying to load a new IOS image to a cisco 1841 router but I seem to be a little stuck. I have full connectivity between my PC (where I have installed Tftp32) and the router I would like to upgrade the IOS to.
However I am getting a time out. It has been a long time I done an upgrade so maybe I am doing something wrong.
Router:

The tftp software is installed and running properly. I have also pointed the Current Directory to the Folder where the IOS image is being located. The Port on the TFTP is 69. I don't have any configs on the router that might prevent that port from being used. The only config I got is the Hostname and ip address on fa0/0 10.1.1.1/30
Any clues to this?
Thanks in advance |

You may also want to run netstat -a command from your DOS prompt and find UDP 69 to confirm that your Windows machine listen on such protocol and UDP port. |

Ipv6 has never been enabled on this IOS.

It was the firewall issue, it was blocking all incoming connections. It was late last night ad I totally forgot about the firewall issue. Thank you. It works now
Thank you both

cramer join:2007-04-10 Raleigh, NC kudos:5 | Ipv6 has never been enabled on this IOS. In the tftp32 setup. If the IPv6 box is checked, it will only listen on an IPv6 socket. It didn't work for me until I unchecked that. |
|
 | reply to krock83 Great you fixed it krock83. Was going to also suggest if you had physical access to the router, pull the CF card and load the IOS via a USB memory card reader. Less hassle that way.

I have the older version 3.3 and Ipv6 wasn't checked, just upgraded to 4.0 and it is checked. Thanks for the heads up on this one...
Thanks

I was wondering how to do that via USB, but I have not come across a example of guide. I downloaded the 1800 series manual but I didn't see it in there... |
|
 | reply to krock83 I hope you mean tftpd32... if that's the case it will select a specific IP so you might want to make sure you have the right IP and 99% of the time the issue is the actual folder where the bin file resides...
If I am not mistaken the x800 series routers only use USB for crypto. The x900 series are the only ones capable of USB storage read writes... |

|
 | reply to krock83 1) power down router and pull the CF card 2) download desired IOS on a computer and connect any USB memory card reader 3) insert CF card into memory card reader and copy over the IOS 4) reinsert CF card into router and power back up 5) verify IOS as normal
There's nothing fancy about the process or the card reader, so long as it can read CF cards, you're laughing.
It's one of those things you discover on your offhours away from work.

When you have USB Flash drive, you can use it to copy over IOS images into internal flash memory. The advantage of using USB Flash drive compared to using CF card is that you can leave the router up and never need to pull out CF card. This is helpful when the router is in production network and can never be powered down.
1) Stick USB Flash drive into your computer 2) Download desired IOS image onto the computer and copy over the image into the flash drive 3) Pull USB Flash drive out of your computer and stick it into the USB router port 4) Copy over the image into internal flash memory
Last time I did this way was using 4 GB USB Flash drive. USB Flash drive with capacity larger than 4 GB may be working as well. Simply try and see if the router recognizes USB Flash drive with capacity larger than 4 GB. |

| Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I tried a SanDisk Cruzer 2GB thumb in an 1811 Monday and it barfed. "show usb" clearly shows everything there is to know about it, but it won't read a filesystem from it.
(I've used a USB CF reader on it before and it had no problem with it. It didn't like that CF native for some reason.) |
|
 | The show usb allows you to use the Cert loaded on the USB for crypto and encryption situations... usb is not an option in ROMMON or any other filesystem for IOS loading at least in 12.X versions maybe it's changed in 15.1 not sure... |

1 edit | Oh, no, it cannot *boot* from USB. But it can read a usb drive once booted. Sometimes. :-)

There might be issue with the USB thumb drive format. What I usually do with brand new, empty, or unused thumb drive is to format the drive when it is plugged in the router so that the format is readable. I then plug the drive into a computer with desired IOS image to copy over.
One thing I noticed after formatting brand new thumb drive, the drive was able to auto-run its crappy software that came with the drive once the drive was plugged into a Windows computer. Obviously the router format did not really wipe out the thumb drive content |

However it definitely does work on a 1921 with ROMMON 15.0(1r)M12:
