Re: Anyone using Unblock-us?

said by dmacgreg:

I just signed up for the free trial of this, but now am hesitant. Logging into online banking, etc with changed DNS seems questionable. Those of you already using Unblock-US, do you guys just use the internet as before?

If you do a tracert, you can see that using the Unblock-US service, only the websites on their list redirect through their proxy, any other website is resolved as normal.

I don't know what a tracert is, but that is reassuring though, as people here seem to be confident of the security of the program.

If you're using a device other than your computer for Netflix and are worried about security, I believe you can just set the router's DNS to whatever they give you, then change it on your computer from 'obtain automatically' to the DNS IP you have now. Like that, your computer would use whatever you have now, but everything else would use unblock-us' new DNS.

Would there be a way to find out what sites are redirected and which aren't?
I still don't trust them... but then again I wouldn't trust any 3rd party. How much can be ascertained through dns? Only which sites are visited?

I believe they have a list of sites that will work with their services. Pretty much any mainstream company that has multimedia available for consumption.

I've been using them successfully for months now. Primarily on my htpc, but sometimes I hook up the laptop to watch content.

I never do anything but view content when I am on their DNS servers ... haven't had any issues yet.
