Re: Hurricane Irene?

said by ebgbjo:

People are making fun of me because I am considering driving home to Ohio tomorrow to avoid the storm, however, I am home alone with my 4yr old and really don't feel like going days without power.

Do what you need to do to feel safe with your kid. If you're really freaking out about it, just go. It is a big storm, and while you'd be fine if you stayed, there's no point in staying if you will be miserable. You'll deal with the next storm better after you see that your house is safe and sound this time

I've only been in Massachusetts for about 4 years now but over 20 years in Florida before that. Living in Florida I can tell you running from a hurricane is an effort in futility. The last time we were predicted to get a direct hit in Tampa people left to Orlando. Guess what happened? About 3 hours before it was predicted to hit Tampa it made a hook and nailed Orlando. People ran right into the hurricane!

I can also say in over 20 years dealing with a higher amount of hurricanes then anyone in the NE area that the worst damage wasn't from a hurricane but a no name tropical storm while I was in Florida.

Irene doesn't look like much IMHO. I'm no doing anything special to prepare. It's not a bad idea to prepare if it gives you peace of mind though. I've just been through more hurricanes in the last 15-20 years then what most people will be through in their entire lives. I've also gotten in my car and drove around looking for an open Papa John's in the middle of the eye of the hurricane for 60-90 minutes until I found one open. I got my pizza and made it back home safe and sound before the eye wall hit.

As I was driving into work down in Foxboro today, I saw a new house construction nearing completion. I thought to myself, "Good luck with that, dudes."

You all stay safe and remember to check back in when it's over so I can stop worrying about you all.

DKat - I have a friend in Alfred, ME. How close to the coast are they?

It's inland, but I am not sure by how much. I am only guessing, 30 miles or so.

You don't HAVE to listen to anything Unless you broke the remote and can't turn off the TV or something... I honestly haven't heard much of anything about it, my co-workers and family are just doing common-sense things like taking their boats somewhere safe and making plans to stay home Sunday.

Hurricanes Gloria and Bob did plenty of damage in Massachusetts and followed very similar tracks to Irene... it makes sense to take precautions if you live in a vulnerable area. Watertown isn't really one of those areas - neither is Cambridge. We'll be fine.

In 1954 people in New England didn't have the bla bla of the media and were caught unprepared when Hurricane Carol struck. Read about it;

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Carol

For all the warnings that result in nothing, occasionally, the sky does fall. Better to be a little prepared than to get caught with your head buried in the sand.

Maybe you would like to watch what happened to my hometown when I was 5. I still remember Putnam's flood of '55 from a hurricane.

Edit: And just because folks are preparing for this does not mean they are panicing. Better to be safe than sorry.

After Bob dropped 1/2 the trees in my yard, I pay attention.
Work is on a south facing beach and I don't want it in the lobby.

Notice to guests: Don't Come.
I gave directions to the shelter to all the rooms today.

Looks like it will hit at night for bonus points.

LettuceBerg, you live in Watertown, I live on Cape Cod. Big difference. The ocean is ~150~ feet from work and 8-10 feet below me, I'll play it safe. Shoveling sand out of motel rooms isn't my idea of fun.

The first band of rain from Irene is here - it got pretty dark/ominous and it's been pouring rain for about 45 minutes. Very occasional thunder and lightning.

I'm hearing that some roads are already flooding.

Confirmed on the flooding.

Parts of I-90 in Boston are flooding as well, especially between Copley and the Allston Tolls. As I was vacating the city, an 18 wheeler in the left lane going east easily covered cars in the left two westbound lanes with a sheet of water, and the dip before going uphill to the exit 20 tolls was flooded on the right lane.

Route 30 in Wayland was flooding a bit a couple hours ago.

I'm close to making a go/no-go decision on getting my butt up to Nashua to weather out the storm.

Good Evening Mr. & Mrs. New England and all the ships at sea... This is Cape Cod calling.

Cape Cod looks to be spared the worst of the storm since recent tracks are heading west. Motel Happy as Hell on the Sea has moved all guests to the upper deck and closed the lower rooms. My Russian kids did a great job! We smell like sweat and chlorine from the pool. We are taking a dinner (Pizza and subs) and 1 beer break before we close the pool. Low tide now, High @ 10:45pm or so. We saw a bluefish strike close to the beach this afternoon. Hurricane flags are on my desk.

Brutal humidity.

Not as much "electricity" in the air as last year's "My Name is Earl". Perhaps a small Hurricane Party, not like last years blow-out. Some rain but not like Fenway.

I wish you all well.

Just lost the top half of a huge oak in my front yard. It wiped out my gutter and lamps next to the front door. Fortunately no major structural damage. Called my tree service to get high up on what will be a long list.

Neighbor across the street has a tree on his house, Also looks OK structurally.

Looks like a long day ahead. Cold beer after the peak has passed!!

Tropical Storm Irene

9 AM NEW YORK (AP) — The National Hurricane Center in Miami says that Irene has lost hurricane strength and made landfall on New York's Coney Island.

Forecasters say Irene's winds have fallen to 65 mph.

They say Irene should move over New England by the afternoon. Officials also warn that isolated tornadoes are possible in the northeast throughout the morning.

I guess Northeastern CT is getting hit like I am. I'm located in the northern part of SE CT. Lots of wind and moderate rain. Power is out in most areas.

Re: Hurricane Irene?

Sorry Hank Fap, I only wanted a tree to drop for some firewood in 2 years. I'd never wish damage to persons or property.

Wind off the ocean was tossing spray last night. Not much damage between work and home. Leaves and twigs.

I'll catch a nap and then back to work to re-construct.
