Arriving BWI Sunday with Irene

My flight into BWI is scheduled to arrive at 4PM Sunday, and as you all know, Irene is going to be in the neighborhood then.
If the forecast track does not change much, then she should be north and east of Baltimore at that time.
BWI will still be very windy at 4PM with lots of shear and gust.

My questions are, do you think that BWI will be shut down for the whole day, or will they wait for the last minute and then re-open as soon as they can?
Even if they do a minimal shut down, will this still completely screw my chances of getting there from DFW?

My contingency plan is to change my outbound flight to Pittsburgh and drive the 4.5 hours to Westminster, MD, where I'll be staying all week.

Depends on how close or out to sea it is.

When the rain/air comes in here from the northeast, it is usually bad because of all the moisture.... rain can be prolonged, torrential and volumes enough to flood areas, with minimal visibility.
It won't be so much the winds, unless it is close, but the water volume.

Here is a very local weather site

My guess is they will reroute you if bad enough, if not you will be windowed in.
I know that with severe weather conditions, airlines have been given permission in the past to fly through restricted airspace, not saying that it still happens, but if it were me, I'd fly for BWI.... what is the worst? they reroute you to Pittsburgh without you having to pay for a flight change?
Pittsburgh is on the other side of the mountain chains so should be much less affected, as opposed to any east coast airport.

Thanks for the info.
With the current forecast, at 4PM the center should over Long Island or The LI Sound.
The airport should be open by then, but, will there be huge backlog that means later flights like mine are diverted or canceled?
Am I just being paranoid?
Probably, but my week in Taneytown will be severely "damaged" if I can't be there first thing Monday morning.

Probably a little paranoid. If BWI is backlogged, they might divert you to Reagan National or Dulles. Both of which are about a 1.5 drive to Westminster on a Sunday night.

I predict a stop-over in Pittsburgh.

The NWS has moved the track back to the left ( West ).
This will have a greater effect on Baltimore than forecasted yesterday.
The major airlines are now waving the change fees for East coast flights, so that will help.

I don't think that BWI will be back in operation until well into the evening, let alone by 4PM.
I also believe that airports like Dulles are going to be any better off.
I'm about to change my flight to PIT.

Yep it just depends on the track.
West is bad, east is better.
West means the eye comes closer to here.

from the map Dulles may be windows in (maybe)

When Gloria came through on a Friday in 1985, the storm had cleared the NYC metro area by 1PM. The airports resumed limited operations around 3PM, but things weren't "normal" until the following Tuesday. The big hurdle will be getting personnel to handle arrivals back in place. If people who were sent home have trouble getting back in, that will be a fly in the ointment. Then there's fleet logistics. Priority will be given to arriving flights using aircraft that will be able to depart again. For example, if the aircraft your flight uses is supposed to wind up in NY or Boston, it is very likely it may go to Pittsburgh or Atlanta instead and hold there until it can go go through...where a plane that's going to turn around and go to Dallas or Chicago probably will get in (though with some significant delay). And, then you have to take into consideration there could be flooding or storm damage that would further delay things.

If it's possible, I would change my plans to arrive BWI on Monday afternoon or evening. Or, go to Pittsburgh and just spend the night there. The uncertainty of the storm's track makes it tough to call, especially since it has been on an increasingly westward trend. The closer it comes to the Chesapeake, the bigger the resulting fustercluck in the Washington-Baltimore corridor will be. You sure don't want to get stuck driving into tropical storm conditions.
