| You're a bit behind the news cycle. They declared last night that residents in OC have to be off the island by 5PM today. | Just curious: We got a final tally yet on the number of people whose dead bodies were picked up by officials because they didn't follow orders, vs. the number who also didn't follow orders yet didn't require dead body pick-up?
Or is it still a little early for that final number?
Or maybe it was already a given? 100% for the former, 0% for the latter?

| said by beachintech:. . storm didn't do as much damage as expected. No, it didn't. And I have nooo problem with that. None whatsoever.
Nor am I suggesting officials made the wrong call by issuing an evacuation order, or that extreme precaution in such a scenario is the wrong thing-- it's not. It's the right thing. Inconvenience beats death and injury, every time.
I was suggesting only to another poster that there might perhaps be some gray area in-between 'following an evacuation order' and 'certain death'. |

I've also heard 20 and 22. Depends on how you count 'em, I guess. Of course, nobody's saying (but you) that every one of those deaths was a person that had ignored an evacuation order, either.
One I heard about had a heart-attack while he was nailing plywood to his windows before the storm hit. Another was a fifteen year-old girl killed in a traffic accident because a traffic light wasn't working, and neither car stopped at the intersection. In yet another traffic death, a man drove off the road and hit a tree.
I'm not sure if it should be proper to chalk those kinds up to 'storm deaths' or not. At any rate, let's call it 20 for now. That's for all affected States.
How many failed to evacuate Ocean City and that little town where the sheriff ordered extra body bags, and all the other towns and areas where there was an evacuation order? Only 20, total? And so then all of them died?
No, I think not. |
