[general] Getting WildBlue this week

Anything I should prepare for with WildBlue? Getting it installed this week. Had wireless but it has been very slow so satellite internet here I go!

I would have waited until the new satellite launches personally. It is launching at the end of September.

It supposedly has more capacity then all of the Ka-Band satellites combined.

Congrats, keep us updated on how the installation goes and how well it works afterwards. What wireless did you have before?
Thanks, Tony

Honestly though I think you are taking a step back. I would take slow wireless over satellite any day. The wireless would haft to be degraded pretty severe to be as bad as Wildblue is right now.

Should have stayed with the wireless. Now you are going to have latency that will make playing most games online impossible and caps that will make trying to watch youtube videos or movies infuriating. I have Hughesnet and have had Wildblue and I can tell you that slower download speeds are better than a good day with satellite, I Have speeds of 4Mb/s now on Hughesnet and would give them up in a minute for a 1Mb/s connection with low latency and I may very soon switch to Millenicom just for that. Don't get me wrong, I am gratefull every day for my satellite connection and even more so for the new speed increases but satellite is one step up from the bottom of the barrel with dial-up being the very bottom.

The reason I stwiched is because it takes about 20 minutes or more to watch a UTube video. At about 5:30 to 7:00 I could barely load my email!

Satellite is going to be hell too. Crap service during the day followed by even crappier service at peak time.

Most days it's good. Other days I wish I still had dial up. Been using WB for about 8 years now. Bright side is that by the end of the year or early next year I will "finally" be on fiber optics. They are doing the area (rural) and things should look up.

You will have difficulty streaming video on Wildblue. At least on my spot beam they implemented Stepped Download Speeds that begin around 11 am and end after 10 pm. If you want to stream a 90 minute movie in 288p (lowest bit rate) from hulu, expect it to take 4 to 6 hours during prime time. You will be trapped in a 2 year service commitment. Wildblue absolutely sucks. If you have other Internet options, stay away from Wildblue.

Run away. Run far far away. Just finished yet another fight with the GotSky people after disconnecting. Horrible customer service, and it's faster to watch YouTube on my iPhone with 3G than my computer with satellite internet. How sad is that?
