[Hockey]Official 11/12 Toronto Maple Leafs Thread

Well, time to start talking about it, less than a month to go before the first pre-season game.

Sorry for quality...

Will you be making it to a game this year?
Trades, up and coming prospects, and of course, will Toronto give the city something to cheer about, finally?

And, of course, our yearly poll. (to be closed October 20, 2011)

I can't wait for the start of the season... I think it will all depend how Reimer plays, and in the event that he falters, how Gustavsson is able to play behind him.

Goaltending has been this team's Achilles heel for 5+ years.

Hoping that Kessel will have a more consistant season, and that Grabovski, McArthur and Kulemin have as good seasons as they did last year.

I agree with HiVolt See Profile the teams success will depend on how well our goalies play and the how well the boys in front play as well. If the monster can stay healthy and Reimer can continue his stellar goal-tending from last season to this season then we stand a chance to do very well.

I'll have to see if I can snag three seats sometime, want to take both kids to a game...but that might be pricy.

I agree with what others have said here, the Leafs will only go as far as their goaltending takes them. Still not overly happy with the D and the forwards are likely to be "streaky"

Hey JEFF was that pic taken at a BP? (Most of the BP's I go to have that countdown clock up in the bar)

No, just a local university joint in Waterloo -- Morty's. Most will tell you that Morty's has the best chicken wings...it does. Also an excellent sports bar, lots of HD TV'S everywhere.

I'll take another pic when we are down to our last 24 hours.

I am excited about this year. I do believe they will make the playoffs....but beyond that...

Yay, my chance to turn 320 into 640 dollars! (as I bet my friend $20 back in the 06-07 season that the Leafs wouldn't make the playoffs and they haven't since).

Its kind of been a running joke now...I initially went double or nothing in the following season...and its just kind of our inside joke now, I tell him, you can pay me $320 now or $640 later .

So I look for another hapless season where they come screaming out of the gate and then flop...Reimer can't go a full season, and I really haven't followed any sorts of acquisitions or how they are playing but pre-season performance does not = regular season performance as I've seen in the past.

So, here's to another out of playoff season, maybe just 2 or 3 points out but good enough to be out!

On paper, the Leafs defence should be a good one. You have Aulie, Franson, Komisarek, Liles, Phaneuf, and Schenn. There's no reason this defence core should do bad and if they do, I'll put all the blame on the coaching. Besides Liles and Phaneuf they might not be so offensive, but Liles can proivde the assists and Phaneuf the firepower. Either way, in their own end they should be a force. I'm not giving any lee-way to the coach for a bad defence.

The offence, like always is a mystery with many questions.

- Will Lomardi come back and play good or will he go the route of Savard and slowly be forced into retirement (don't think it's official yet).

- How will Connolly do? Good skill, but he's another one who's injury prone. If he can stay healthy he should fit in well with Kessel and maybe give Kessel some more life

- MacArthur, Kulemin, Grabovski, should have a good year, but I doubt they will match last year. To expect that much out of them is a little unfair to them because they've only done it once. If they can do it again I'll expect the same, but for now I'll expect a decent year.

As for the goalies, it depends on the defence. A team that relies on its goalie too much isn't going to be a good team. The goalie is just another player and he needs help from the defence. If the defence is as good as it should be then even a decent year from Reimer will be good enough. We don't need him to be stellar, we just need him and the defence to play up to par.

First pre-season game is on Monday versus Ottawa on LeafsTV. If you are not a subscriber, you can watch it online free of charge via a promotion with LeafsTV.

Go here: »leafstv.neulion.com/leafstv/secure/loginform

Click 'sign up now', enter your postal code and click submit, then on the next page on the left you will see the button to click for "Leafs TV Game Pass" - free of charge.

Now they do ask for name/address, but the box that is normally used for entering the credit card info is not there. (bottom left) In case you are wondering why they ask for address, this is the same form used for those buying access, just without the credit card box.

Anyway, if you want to see the pre-season opener for free, and you don't have LeafsTV, you can catch it online here.

good game tonight...Liles looked good...i didn't realize how big Colborne is, while not a really strong skater, he seems to be a strong player...Gardiner was solid (but likely won't make the team, although could be called up if anyone gets injured)...Gustavsson wasn't amazing, but wasn't terrible...not sure what the deal is with him...Kadri looked good too, as did Armstrong and Bozak...that was a solid 3rd line.

yea...fortunately, they are going to fine tune the line-up and keep sending players back so the "real team" will have a few games to warm up...as decent as Colborne looked yesterday, he didn't have a good game tonight...i think more time in the Marlies would really help him...one bright spot is i thought Kadri had another good game.

Leafs did nothing to make themselves better. Same old same old. Same as the Jays, but the Leafs don't have the budget excuse. Seriously, Connolly was the best Burkie could come up with, when you run the richest team in the NHL? Damn.. they don't have a hope in Hell yet again. Beyond silly at this point. Depressing..

It is almost like every team based out of Toronto is paid to lose.

Kinda like if the Yankees didn't make the post season for a decade and all they added was Kevin Gregg Joke is over. Can nobody turn this team around? Sign some legit freaking forwards. This is supposed to be an NHL team for crying out loud, and we are supposed to care about prospects yet again? When they are making money hand over fist? No.. come on.

When they are making money hand over fist? No.. come on.

Allow me to introduce you to the current NHL collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which has a salary cap, so that teams don't simply spend more than anyone else in an attempt to buy a championship (see: New York Yankees) rather than growing their own talent through drafting and minor league systems. Everyone can spend the same amount, so it's about getting the most for your money and not who has the most to spend.

Now, I'm not a fan of the blue team, but this year's crop of UFAs had a very small pool of top six forwards, and they were in high demand. In addition, the cap and floor both rose dramatically over last year so the cost of landing a top-tier player was higher than ever before, and teams were scrambling to overpay players to make it to the salary floor. Given this, there wasn't much Burke could do other than land what he did (I'm not a huge fan of Connelly, but that's just me), and past actions have limited the team's ability to grow their own talent due to trades of draft picks for current players. Draft picks are potential, not guarantees, but teams are all in the same boat on draft day so it's up to each one to do their homework during the season and know who they are looking for.

It's up to each team to build their future based on today, rather than attempt to go and purchase another team's work. It's the NHL, not MLB.
