Re: [Hockey]Official 11/12 Toronto Maple Leafs Thread

Not to mention, it's not easy to trade for top talent. Teams realize how hard it is to find young players like Stamkos, Crosby, Ovechkin, etc etc, and they sign them to basically career contracts.

That is, unless you trade for top talent that comes with a lot of baggage, so that you are getting a player that is (or was) top tier and is being paid accordingly, but may have personality/performance/personal issues that have to be dealt with.

Actually, I wasn't referring to Kessel; I was thinking of Minnesota and Heatley.

I was thinking of Heatley as well, actually. First he wanted out of Ottawa, now he wanted out of San Jose... I'm surprised there's still a team for him to play on...

Heatley didn't want out of San Jose; San Jose wanted him out. He had a limited no-trade clause where he would submit a list of 10 teams he wouldn't go to, and Minnesota wasn't on the list so Doug Wilson engineered the trade for Havlat. Brilliant move on his part.

Kessel and Boston, Philadelphia and Richards / Carter, Heatley and San Jose......all cases where the teams made the move and it wasn't because of a demand of the player.

I voted for 80 - 89 points for the Leafs this year.

Lost again to their nemesis tonight - Buffalo - 3-2. Pretty spirited game, too bad Buffalo seems to have the Leafs number, although the Leafs won the last 3 meetings between the two teams last year.

I'm hopin' for playoffs this year, but, as usual with the Leafs, too many "ifs and buts" to get too excited - but here's hopin'

Leafs beat the Sens 5-3 to even their preseason record at 3-3.

It's going to be interesting what they're going to do with a guy like Jake Gardiner? Will Kadri stick and make an inpact? And Ben Scrivens is still in the goaltending mix and will probably get a game vs. Detroit this weekend, although i can't see him sticking around, no matter how good a preseason he's had. The Leafs will given Gustavsson every chance to succeed - at least half a season.

Let's hope Reimer is as good this year as he was the last half of last year. Too many times we see goalies come out of the chute running on all 8 cylinders, then, in their 2nd year they fall back to earth!

Kadri has a sprained knee...not sure how serious yet as he is getting an MRI (kind of funny how you get them in 24 hours when you pay for them )...Jake Gardiner is very good, but no need to rush him...playing at least part of the year in the AHL would still be good for him.

It seems to be Brian Burke's MO to have a guy spend some time in the minors - he did that with all his players, even the ones who turned out to be stars/superstars.

With so many NHL calibre d'men, the Leafs need to see how it all shakes out re: 5 - 8 guys on the totem pole.

good win vs Detroit tonight...Gardiner is looking good...doubtful he will be in the line up though (to start the season), i'm not sure if there is room...one thing the Leafs are stacked in is D...good to see Komisarek get the winner in OT...he had a few rough points during the game, so if anyone deserved a break tonight, it was probably him...Brown was awesome, that 4th line was quite good (Brown, Orr and Zigamanis).

Clarke MacArthur gets a suspension for hit on Abdelkader:

Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and two regular season games for his hit on Justin Abdelkader of the Detroit Red Wings last night.

unfortunately, we didn't really see it last night as it happened off camera (there was a scuffle at the end of the period, but we didn't know why)...after seeing the reply on TSN, it was still tough to say as it was only one camera angle, but a minimal suspension is understandable...and that is all i was asking for Neil to get (couple games).

Tough call. I can see if you look at it up close there is head contact, and it is more egregious considering Abdelkader didn't have the puck. However Abdelkader was also 'low'.

I'm kinda wondering if players will develop new tactics to avoid hits by keeping their head down low.

Shanahan has been tossing out suspensions left, right and center - and I can't help but wonder if the league is having 'buyers remorse' over putting him in the disciplinarian's chair.

after seeing that angle, i am fine with Shanny's call...MacArthur should have hit the shoulder, not the head...perhaps he tried but missed due to Abdelkaters position, but i think he could have tried harder...Shanny's call of 2+2 is appropriate and i have no problems with it.

Neil should have received the same punishment.

Well, after watching the entire Leafs pre-season I can say that I think this team is about an 8th place team.

Flashes of brilliance along with flashes of utter ineptitude. Watching the current Leafs PK should be used as a punishment in jails (so what exactly was the point of hiring new assistants if they produce the same garbage?)

Gonna be interesting to watch the Jekyll & Hyde act this team does all season long.

Well, after watching the entire Leafs pre-season I can say that I think this team is about an 8th place team.

That's IF everything falls in place - Reimer has an above average year, d-men perform as good on the ice as it appears on paper, the special teams improve (and in the preseason both were lousy), and the forwards mesh and score 30+ more goals then they did last year. They also have to avoid the annual Nov-Dec slumps they've endured, especially during the Wilson tenure as coach.

They also have to avoid any long term injuries - if one or two of their premier performers go down for any length of time, it could spell disaster.

That's alot of ifs - if you see them "about an 8th place team" which team(s) do you see the Leafs passing to make the playoffs?? And, if realignment comes in 2012 - 13 season and Detroit comes into the East, it will be even more difficult for the Leafs to make the playoffs.

Apparently, there is some rumblings of panic among the Leafs brass according to Steve Simmons column today in the Sun. He intimates that they are less then enamoured with the team as it's constituted and is trying to swing a deal to bring in more firepower.

Methinks Ron Wilsons on a short leash - a very short leash. God help him if the Leafs fail to get off to a good start and maintain it through the early going!
