 | [connectivity] An alternative Modem for lightning drops First off I used to be a VZ customer but now am under Fairpoint ruling (NH) but I figured I'd get better help in with this sort of general ADSL question.
Right now we are provisioned for 1792/448 and synch to speed perfectly. Currently we use a Westell 6100. Now during thunderstorms the connections drops countless times and is essentially useless till the lightning is long gone. This is obviously not a good thing when my Mom is vpning into work.
Here are our Line Stats with the Westell 6100
With my current Westell 6100 here are the stats: Transceiver Revision: 01.00.09.00 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: G.DMT Mode Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1792 448 Margin (dB) 12.5 15.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 63.5 31.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 16.6 10.8
We also had an older Westell 2200 laying around the I figured I leave running for a few days.
Westell 2200 stats: Transceiver Revision: 7.1.254 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: G.DMT-Mode Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1792 448 Margin (db) 9.5 12.0 Line Attenuation (db) 63.5 18.5 Transmit Power (db/Hz) 13.0 11.0
With that information in hand I'm considering purchasing a Netopia 2242N. Which I hear is rock solid.
Two questions: Can anyone reccomend modems for this problem/alternative solutions ?
According to the Attentuation about how far are we from the co-op ? I read that purchasing an Adsl2+ modem may be of benefit as Fairpoint is installing ADSL2 in the Dslams without advertising it.
Thank you all. |

| ADSL2/ADSL2+ uses slightly improved modulation. It extends the distance for the given speed about 600 feet. Any new modem you purchase will support the newer protocol, if you buy a used modem be sure it supports ADSL2/2+
Assuming both modem and DSLAM support ADSL2 it will be used preferentially, if not connection will revert to ADSL. By way of example I use a Netopia 3346N modem/router that supports ADSL2, but my connection is still ADSL (listed as DMT) because the DSLAM line card I'm connected to does not support ADSL2.
Your margin is pretty low, due to distance. To get a rough estimate of distance multiple download attenuation in dB, by 250. Based on that you are about 16,000 feet from the DSLAM.
Connect to the Telco NID test jack to see if inside wiring equipment is degrading performance.
Most NIDs include a half-ringer test circuit. It is used to facilitate automated testing. DSL is designed to work in the presence of half-ringer but is represents a small load on the DSL signal. If possible try to have the half ringer removed.
Whole house POTS/DSL splitter does a better job isolating voice from DSL then the per phone in-line filter. Installing one may help a little.

 | Hey thanks for the help. We have a whole house splitter/a dedicated jack for the dsl modem. I'm just not sure how to get rid of the lightening drop outs. I'm mainly trying to get the best set up possible because my mom uses Logmein to tunnel into her mac at work and when lightening comes by it's just useless. I'm really going to try to push for 3/786 I know it's questionable but is there not a way to convince them to just let me try it ? Thanks. Ps how does the netopia do in lightning ? |

Unless FairPoint finds some sort of trouble on the circuit the only way to get stabler connection is to reduce the speed.
