[service tier(s)] 1.5/384 to 3/784 - The Process

As I discussed in a previous thread we are having issues with lightning knocking out our dsl but it remains rock solid almost all the time.

I spoke with fairpoint about getting the upgrade and he indicated that he would have a linesman (something of the like) review our line and see if it's possible.

Now I'm wondering will he be able to see our transceiver statistics ? Because currently I have a Westell 2200 hooked up which is supposed to be less susceptible to lightning.
These are it's stats:
Westell 2200 stats:
Transceiver Revision: 7.1.254
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT-Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1792 448
Margin (db) 9.5 12.0
Line Attenuation (db) 63.5 18.5
Transmit Power (db/Hz) 13.0 11.0

The Westell 6100 pulls in a bit different stats:
With my current Westell 6100 here are the stats:
Transceiver Revision: 01.00.09.00
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1792 448
Margin (dB) 12.5 15.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 63.5 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 16.6 10.8

While they are running line diagnostics which modem should I have running ? And also has anyone had lightning issues on Fairpoint in rural areas that have been resolved by a modem change ? Thanks.

@suddenlink.net

It looks like your line attenuation is almost at the border for service and this is probbly one reason why you are having issues with lightning, along with a low signal to noise margin

Try connecting to your demarc outside of your house directly and see if your stats improve. Hopefully a service tech can get your lines in a better shape.

Lighting effecting your speed? Did they tell you that or did you just notice this phenomenon? I suppose it's possible but unlikely. What is the lighting coming into your house and striking your modem? Don't upgrade, you'll just be giving a junk company more money for a junk connection. I had the 3Mbps package and the highest I ever got was 2.7Mbps down @ 4am in the morning before work. Upload was as advertised though, weird. Oversubscribed since once 4pm rolled around I wouldn't be able to get above 600Kbps down. Sad. I love buffer. There is one possible fix. I live out in the sticks and wasn't hooked up to the cable grid so I called Timewarner just to see how much it would cost for them to run a line. How much? Free, yup, free, no contract, and I pay 5 dollars less a month than Fairpoint's 3Mbps package and get 16-20Mbps/1Mbps. Don't upgrade unless you need more upload, otherwise it will be a waste. This is personal experience as I've had them three times in three different locations and every time I never received even close to what I was paying for. I have two (actually three, just found another) Fairpoint modems if you want to give your modem theory a try. I have zero use for them as I'll never get DSL.
