 | Router as VPN client and server at once ? Is it possible ? Hi,
I'm a newbie regarding VPN and open source firmwares, and I'm planning to buy a router such as Netgear WNR3500L (open source edition) or a Linksys equivalent, running DD-WRT or Tomato firmware.
I'd like to setup this router as a permanent VPN client with a VPN provider such as vpntunnel.se and also as a VPN server to gain access to my LAN devices from WAN side (i.e. from a laptop with an openVPN client).
My question is :
In terms of routing and VPN tunnels, is it possible to make both VPN client and server setups coexist simultaneously on a same router ? The few information I could find about that seem to indicate that a router can only be VPN client OR server, but not both at the same time. Am I wrong, or is it possible, and if so, how could I achieve this ? Should I just setup server and client parts in 2 different sections of the router, or is it a bit more tricky ?
Could I gain VPN access to my LAN from WAN side through a dynamic IP (and dyndns) provided by my VPN provider ? Or my router will still listen to VPN client connections on my standard ISP IP while connected as a VPN client ?
I'm a bit confused and need to ensure this is a doable prior to find the right router and firmware models.
Thanks in advance, I really need some help with this. |

| So far as I can tell, vpntunnel.se uses OpenVPN, a computer client based VPN. This article has hints how to make DD-WRT an end point.
»www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Op···_Routers (It assumes you have access to both routers, and you don't with vpntunnel.se)
The tutorial warns that 4 meg flash is not enough to be an end point, it makes me wonder if 8 meg flash is enough to be 2 endpoints. -- I tried to remain child-like, all I achieved was childish. |

Thanks for your answer, but from what I can understand of your post and the article you say, it just explains how you can link a router set as a client VPN to another router set as a VPN server, to "merge" a network A with a network B and make them a single network C.
I know that users successfully made this router (and others) work with DD-WRT or Tomato as an OpenVPN client with VPN providers such as VPNTunnel and others VPN providers, to share the VPN connection to all their LAN devices. And setting a router to work as a VPN server is quite easy, but how could I make it work both as a VPN client for VPNTunnel and a VPN server to let me access my LAN devices through a VPN connection ?
This seems to be a different case. |

 | reply to glc I have not tried it on DD-WRT or Tomato, but there is no technical reason that prevents this from happening. I know my router supports it, and I just tried it to be sure: creating a VPN connection from my router to a remote location, while having another mobile VPN session to my router on a 3G connection. The mobile VPN connection can access the remote network (the one my router is connected to) just fine too. |

 | Sorry for my late reply and many thanks for having made the test to help.
I still couldn't try the VPN aspects but already bought the Netgear router WNR3500L for my office and upgraded it with latest DD-WRT firmware and it works like a charm and DD-WRT is plenty of great features and settings.
As soon as I have my own LAN at home in the next months (I'm comimg back from abroad and have to wait until I can rent my own flat) I will post the results about double client / server VPN configuration on the same router on this thread so that it could help others find the method through Google searches.
Many thanks again for your help. |
