[Modem] Differing download speeds with different modems

Just because a modem works doesn't mean it provides the fastest service. My original Earthlink DSL modem was a Zyxel 645M-UHP. In attempting to fix some recent intermittent DSL access problems, Earthlink sent me a refurbished P-660R-D1 modem. This modem provides download speed of only about 350 kilobits/sec, while the old Zyxel 645M-UHP, which was suspected of being faulty, works much better, providing 1.08 megabits (1,080 kilobits). So apparently not all modems are created equal.

The intermittency problem proved to be mostly in the AT&T line to my house, not in the modem. And perhaps the slow download was due to the new modem being "refurbished" rather than brand new. And the reason it's not brand new may be that I balked at paying Earthlink $50, plus $20 FedEx, for the thing.

Yes, different chip-sets will show different sync rates and different DSL Stats (Attenuation, Signal to Noise Ratio - SNR, and Capacity Occupation percentages)
