Having some serious problems with new Optimum Wifi

Hey all...my family just switched from Verizon FIOS because a lady came by the house working with optimum saying we could get internet that had 50 MbPS download/upload speed and that we could get it for cheaper than what we had with Verizon FIOS.

Now the problem is that I'm getting NOWHERE near those speeds, even with full wifi bars on Windows 7 Ultimate.

On top of THAT, my wifi connection is VERY unstable. Every 60 seconds or so it will lose internet access on Windows 7, disallowing me from connecting to any sites or download any files, and the only way to fix it is to completely disconnect from the wireless network and then re-connect, which is incredibly annoying and time consuming. It happens about every 60-90 seconds as well, which, as you can imagine, gets incredibly frustrating.

Does anyone else have this problem, and how can I solve it?

Well first off it's 50Mbps download and 8Mbps upload from your cable modem not optimum wifi.

Those speeds can be bottlenecked by your router's processing speed.

What tier are you signed up for? The tiers are 15/2, 50/8, and 101/15.

Connect your Windows 7 computer to your network, instead of Optimum WiFi. You will get much better speeds that way.

I'm sorry, I meant to say 50/8, IDK where I got 50/50 from, haha.

Secondly, I have a Netgear N600 Dual Band Wireless router. And I'd prefer to fix my wifi so I can have mobility. There is only a single ethernet port actually in my house (everything else is in the garage) and it's always used up by my mother's desktop, which is her computer for work...so it's not like I even truly have access to an ethernet cable--basically what I'm saying is that I NEED to fix this wifi. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Re: Having some serious problems with new Optimum Wifi

Sounds like you are connecting to your own wifi router, not to Optimum Wifi, right? It seems you have an issue with your wifi, but you should do some diagnostics to find out.

When you lose internet access, try to "ping" your router - probably 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. If that does not work, you have a problem between your computer and router.

If it does, try pinging your modem at 192.168.100.1. If that does not work, then there is a problem between your router and modem.

If that works, then try to ping yahoo.com.

If you are convinced it is a problem with your wifi, just ask a moderator to move this to the wireless networking forum where they can help you get your wireless network working better.

Okay, so I just put the IP address into my web browser while it was having it's little connection glitch and it couldn't connect. Does that mean I can't ping to it (I don't know squat about internet technology, sorry...).

Can a moderator move this to the wireless networking forum? I didn't even realize that there was one, so this could be in the entirely wrong place. My mom claims she has been having connection issues with her laptop as well, so I don't think it's just my own computer, but instead I think maybe it has something to do with the WIFI router that Optimum installed for us...

Have you tried rebooting the router or selecting a different channel? Sounds like interference is knocking you offline.

I think we could try the Netgear forum first- since it appears to be a router issue.
