JasonPM join:2011-09-06 Pitt Meadows, BC | [BC] New Broadband 50 modem constantly loses connection We just upgraded from extreme to the BB50 a little over a week ago. The first day we had no problems. Starting the next day the modem looses connection every 2-3hrs and has every since. Unplugging the modem, waiting 10s of course works but every 2-3hrs? We've been trying to get through to customer service with no luck for over a week. Did we get a lemon for a modem? Anyone else have this problem? I'm assuming the loss of all internet today is possibly linked to the Tri - Cities outtage? I'm in Pitt Meadows. |

 | reply to JasonPM I'm betting it's a modem levels issue and you should do what ShawSean asked (because he can probably get you fixed). |

 | reply to JasonPM The usual cause for these drops outs are borderline signal levels. So you just need to get a TSR to check the signal levels and then send a tech to clean things up. |
|
 | I waved the shaw guy in from the street (he was on another call) and he boosted the signal. No luck, I still have:
1. Wireless is pretty well non-functioning. 2. Wired internet is slow. Connection to sites requiring encryption is non-functioning.
I was on Shaw 25 and it worked flawlessly. I then switched to Shaw 50 with the new cisco dpc3825 gateway router. REALLY regretting that decision.
If I bring that router to a Shaw office, can they give me the old router back? |
|
 | Hey!
Exact same situation here! I know for a fact everything is fine on my end.
I really am regretting my decision to stick with Shaw. |

TEE join:2011-09-08 Edmonton, AB | reply to JasonPM Same problem here. I feel as if extreme internet with my motorola modem was better. I tested out NHL on my ps3 and xbox and it would randomly lose connection for a few seconds then resume. Its either the smc modem or something on shaw's end. Ever since i switched to bb50, theres been so many problems with the connection. |
|
 | reply to JasonPM I'll say it again:
Email shaw support, or PM ShawSean to check your modem signal levels. They are the likely cause. Once they are improved stability can return. |
|
 | reply to TEE I have the Cisco modem, my B-BB50 connection is solid,
Hasn't gone down in a week now (use an external service to monitor and check for downtime). Had an internet issue before that that provisioning needed to fix, but the modem connection has been solid since installed.
There is alot of reports of that issue with the SMC, but I don't believe it is the BB50 product that is flawed in general. -- Yes, I am not employed and looking for IT work. Have passport, will travel. |

 | reply to JasonPM Do the lights on the modem actually turn off as if you have a lost connection, or do websites just stop responding?
I recently upgraded to the BB100, and using the Cisco modem I seem to periodically lose DNS. I can connect fine between machines on my LAN, or if i'm already connected (in a game, or irc), but looking up sites fail periodically. |

| reply to JasonPM If you are loosing your lights, you are loosing sync. I would suggest calling in to tech support and get them to check your line, and also put your Cisco unit into bridge mode if you have your own router available. First thing I did was called in and got it into bridge mode and it's been rock solid since. Didn't want to tempt the wireless and router part of it, as my dir-655 works wonderfully. |

Slack join:2011-09-09 Vancouver, BC | reply to JasonPM Hey, I just wanted to add to this conversation.
Although the other suggestions here are good (check for signal strength, bridge mode, modem level issues, connection issues, etc), All of those things are just fine for me - however I'm still having issues.
They have examined everything they can for me, on the exact same service, and the problem has yet to be resolved.
The modem loses connection every night (the only time I'm home), multiple times. So there are bigger problems here I think. |

Same here with losing the wifi signal after a few hours. I'm not too happy with the SMC unit overall... |

 | reply to Slack Have they swapped your modem? |

I have 100+ service x 2. My SMC modem acct (used to supply wifi to 80 people) has no issues. The Cisco DPC3825 (internal office use including VOIP) is another story.....Router was replaced the other day but problem is even worse now.
I would certainly appreciate your help as I have the same damned problem. I loose connection every 10 minutes or so for at least 3 minutes. I also noticed on IPCONFIG I have no Connection Specific DNS Server info......its blank. I don't recall ever seeing this blank before? You can reach me voice in Summerland at (removed). Thanks a bunch |

icydude join:2005-03-15 New Westminster, BC | reply to JasonPM I have the same issue but with slightly higher frequency since day one with my connection. Because the modem still shows a constant uptime and I have above average signal strength they said it is my problem and there is nothing they can do about it. It causes me grief when I am trying to move any large files as I'm sitting there with my fingers crossed that an hour into it I wont lose my connection.
I am still convinced that my smc is a terrible piece of hardware. You cant even assign a dhcp reservation, one of fundamental functions that any dhcp server should be capable of.
On a positive note I have had a much more consistent connection speed with bb50 over the past few weeks. |

 | I had my shaw plan changed from extreme to broadband 50. Got the Cisco modem yesterday and replaced the old one. The modem dropped a lot, with 2-3 mins down every 10-15 mins. I called Shaw and they said the modem is online all the time, something is wrong on our side. There is nothing they can do. Second time I called they said change the cable. But before the change everything is fine. I extremely regret making the switch. All my family members are not happy because I suggested it.
p.s. during the down time, there is nothing I can do, you must wait 2 mins or so to get the connection back. Wireless connection also is not good on the modem. we are completely stuck with this thing now. |
