SSJ5Premium join:2001-10-23 Conyers, GA | how to web host from home? i am clueless and dont even know if this is the best forum. I am trying to start a small business. I would like to get a webpage, something small like 3 pages and have about 20 pictures of the work I do. I have found that sites like squarespace will do well for the design and hosting of the site, but to begin with I dont have a ton of cash to host the site.
Can I host this from home? I have a windows 7 PC that is always on. Its not set up as a server, but I could leave it on all the time. How would I get started and would I save in the long run? The other question is once my site starts generating traffic that is too much for my at&t dsl, could I pay another service to host the site and keep the same domain name? |

In addition, your ISP (AT&T) may block the ports required for hosting at home if you are not on a business plan. |

After that it's still quite inexpensive. If your business isn't able to afford hosting by that time, you'll probably be working somewhere else then -- Angus S-F GeoApps, Tucson, Arizona, USA »geoapps.com/ »www.linkedin.com/in/angussf »geoapps.blogspot.com/ |

| reply to SSJ5 Since you say you don't know what you're doing, DON'T attempt to host it from home on a computer you depend on for other things.
You should look at Office 365 or Google's offerings. Yes, there are free options out there but, as a 30+ year small business owner, I cannot emphasize enough that you absolutely have to put money into your infrastructure if you expect to have any kind of success. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

| reply to SSJ5 If it is a .com or .net you should be able to just change the IP address to where you are hosting it. The host can provide you with the address information, and homestead should have a control panel where you log in and change it...or contact their customer support to do it for you.
If homestead won't let you control where it's hosted, you should be able to change your registrar to namecheap or some other. Once moved, you can then control where it points. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

It was a real PITA to work with them trying to get some control of the domain but still use them for some of their services. Good luck if you really have to go down that road. |

 | reply to SSJ5 I have had my own small hosting buisness running for a while now and I am hoping to expand out, get new customers and such. Not sure if I can advertise here, so I won't at this point.
But basically I need people's input. So I know what to offer, what people need and any other information that might help.
Basically I am running under multiple systems which are growing all the time. All the costs I have are paid until 2010. So I am not going to be a here today gone tomorrow kind of guy.
But as I say I could do with some suggestions and such, which may or may not be of help. |
