Massive Power Outage in San Diego County

Heard from my sister-in-law a few minutes ago that a good portion (or most of) San Diego County is with out power.

Friends on Facebook in Poway, Downtown, at the airport, South County, Carlsbad, etc. are all posting about being with out power.

Just heard via KOGO that the Coachella and Salton Sea power plants had explosions.

A rolling brown out might be the reason.

This is bigger than a rolling outage.

Listening to the SDGE news conference... sounds like the event started with a transmission line failure connection AZ to CA.

Some areas will get power back tonight. But will probably will be sometime tomorrow before all power is back on.

A ham radio operator told KOGO radio at 4:40 p.m. that the Coachella and Salton Sea power plants have gone down. No confirmation yet from officials. Let's not be alarmists.

Words of advice: Do not try to get to the 5 freeway on Ortega Highway.

More words of advice: I you can't negotiate a 4-way stop, give someone your keys and stay the hell home.

I'm very happy right now that I don't still live in San Diego.

If the Marines have lost power, the terrorists have already won?

Mission Viejo looks like your best bet. I was in San Juan Capistrano earlier, and everything was out. From what I've read, Laguna Hills is affected as well.

Aren't you on Edison? This only seems to be affecting SG&E customers from what I've heard. I just drove from UCI down near Technology, and we're up all over Irvine.

Its not just San Diego, its the entire grid towards the border.

Because of the "disturbance" on the grid, San Onfre shut down too.

Official APS link; »www.aps.com/main/news/releases/r···673.html

Whoever wrote the controls to this system is going to have a lot of explaining to do:

quote:
The outage appears to be related to a procedure an APS employee was carrying out in the North Gila substation, which is located northeast of Yuma. Operating and protection protocols typically would have isolated the resulting outage to the Yuma area. The reason that did not occur in this case will be the focal point of the investigation into the event, which already is under way.
