 | That looks like the next generation Surfbeam system from Viasat. It's what we'll be seeing here if Viasat 1 ever gets to orbit. |

LINCSATPremium join:2003-06-15 Markham, ON | reply to LINCSAT I agree the costs are high but trying a demo of the 10/4 package I am impressed. Now I live in toronto now but I had lincsat/direcway many years ago with the dw4000 unit and was impressed. I moved to toronto and now have rogers ultimate 50/2 but we have a business in northern england and are looking into this new tooway setup on the new satellite. We have dsl, dail up and wireless choice, the wireless is not reliable, the dsl we are on the limit for distance and well dial up forget it. When I go over in october I will be picking up one of these new dishes with the new modem and going for the 10/4 package. We will be using this for business and hopefully phone use and it will meet are needs and as for price when I lived in markham, canada my direcway cost per month for 2/128 was 129.95 a month so this is a bargin and hint hint there are bigger caps coming with more speed!!! |
|
 | said by LINCSAT:....hint hint there are bigger caps coming with more speed!!! Remember, they said "The total capacity is in excess of 130 Gbps, more than all other satellites over North America combined."
But in US, if they "penny pinch" the price spread and then lower bandwidth quota, talk about a royal screwing.
Whole idea was to give consumers "more," not less, at a cheaper rate. |

| Spice is right. Hughesnet doubled thier download speeds for everyone and I am now getting 4Mb/s but the only time you see much difference at all is when you are actually downloading something. Webpages don't load much if any faster and secure sites are still just as slow so pretty much it just helps you FAP out if your not carefull. It is nice to see them improving things and when I do need to fownload something it zips right through compared to before but you have to watch that cap even closer now. |

LINCSATPremium join:2003-06-15 Markham, ON | reply to LINCSAT ViaSat-1 scheduled to launch October 19th, spreading high-speed satellite service across North America By Donald Melanson posted Oct 8, 2011 9:07AM
It's been delayed a few times already, but the high-capacity ViaSat-1 satellite is now in the process of being prepped for a new launch date: October 19th. Once in operation, it'll bring download speeds up to 10Mbps to satellite internet customers in both Canada and the US (including Hawaii) via Xplornet and WildBlue, respectively, and serve other partners like JetBlue. Those interested can keep an eye on the source link below for a live broadcast of the launch.
Show full PR text ViaSat-1 Launch Scheduled For October 19
Carlsbad, Calif. - ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) has announced that the launch of the ViaSat-1 high-capacity satellite is scheduled for Wednesday, October 19 at 11:48 am PDT and 2:48 pm EDT. The satellite will be launched from the historic Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Liftoff is scheduled for 12:48 am local time (October 20) in Baikonur.
The fueling of the ViaSat-1 spacecraft was completed on Monday, October 3. In the next phase of pre-launch preparations, the satellite will be mated to the launch vehicle payload adapter to begin the joint operations phase of the program. The combined assembly will then be joined with the Breeze M upper stage in preparation for mating to the Proton launch vehicle early next week.
ViaSat-1 is designed to transform the economics and quality of service that satellite broadband can provide, with the capacity to serve the accelerating growth in bandwidth demand for multimedia Internet access over the next decade and enable satellite to compete with terrestrial alternatives. The high-capacity Ka-band spot beam satellite has planned coverage over North America and Hawaii, enabling a variety of new, high-speed broadband services for WildBlue in the U.S. and Xplornet in Canada. With a capacity estimated at 140 Gbps, ViaSat-1 will become the highest capacity satellite in the world once it is safely on orbit. For more information and to watch a webcast of the launch, visit the ILS mission page at www.ilslaunch.com/mission-control/mission-viasat-1 or the ViaSat update page at www.viasat.com/viasat-1-launch.

xplornet Packages for ViaSat-1 Engadget posted the launch story a few days ago and there was a comment by a supposedly xplornet employee regarding their new packages on the ViaSat-1.
Essential*: 1.5Mbps DL, 256Kbps UL, 10GB Monthly Cap for $54.99, overage $3.50 per GB Advantage*: 3.0Mbps DL, 500Kbps UL, 20GB Monthly Cap for $59.99 ($54.99 1st year), overage $3.50 per GB Performance*: 5.0Mbps DL, 500Kbps UL, 30GB Monthly Cap for $89.99 ($59.99 1st year), overage $2.50 per GB *I think these are the correct names of the packages. You want more info, give us a call.
If true, this would be a great improvement in price/speed and the higher cap. Let's hope they offer a reasonable upgrade for existing customers. -- Mike | Xplornet Ka-Bang 1500/300 Service, Beam 1, DD-WRT Routers, Mac OS 10.6 & 10.7 on several Macs and Dell Mini Hackintoshes, YCam, Skype, RE System. |

Re: [general] Tooway KA Band Read!! said by Skyway:Interesting... the modem shows only one coax cable for transmit and receive... In re-certifying and training on the new setup; the single cable, as well as the Software Key now locking the TRiA into the proper satellite and beam (and filtering out ALL others) and even the signal meter being built in to the TRiA, makes this seem a much more viable option for installer and customer alike... This will shave at LEAST 45 minutes of my installation time! As for the actual speeds and what the WIMAX will offer over the current setup... That will remain to be seen... -- My Computer: Dell XPS M1530, Intel Centrino Core2 Duo processor @ 1.83GHz, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS |

Re: xplornet Packages for ViaSat-1 said by Mikofox :Essential*: 1.5Mbps DL, 256Kbps UL, 10GB Monthly Cap for $54.99, overage $3.50 per GB
Advantage*: 3.0Mbps DL, 500Kbps UL, 20GB Monthly Cap for $59.99 ($54.99 1st year), overage $3.50 per GB
Performance*: 5.0Mbps DL, 500Kbps UL, 30GB Monthly Cap for $89.99 ($59.99 1st year), overage $2.50 per GB Assuming the information about the packages is correct, the best deal is the Advantage package which will probably attract the most customers. The download speed is 5.9 times faster than the Value Pack, and the usage limit is 2.7 times higher. The price is 20% higher. By not pointing spot beams at western areas with low demand, they will increase their revenue by about 10% (7 spot beams out of 36 spot beams, half full). The combination is 11.5 times more usage. With Viasat-1 advertised for use with broadband applications, I suspect the customers will use their Internet more heavily than customers on Value Pack, Since Viasat-1 is supposed to be 10 times faster than WB-1, these numbers are too good. All of the new capacity is being dedicated to higher download speeds and usage limits. They expect to put the same number of customer on each spot beam as WB-1. In other words, Wildblue expects to overload the spot beams and degrade the performance, just like they currently do. Customers will probably get these speeds initially before slowing down as the spot beams fill up.
The prices make the Select and Pro Packs obsolete in areas where Viasat-1 has coverage.. The primary barrier to upgrading will be purchasing new equipment. If all of the Select (~10%) and Pro Pack (~25%) customers leave Anik-F2 and WB-1, Wildblue will almost be able to double the number of Value Pack customers on those satellites which would increase their revenue about 10%.
