| Kenwood TH-D72 Picked one up today at the HAMCON in Torrance. Haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet, as I'm packing for a trip tonight. From the reviews and blogs I've read, it's a nice jump up from the TH-D7 I've been using for quite a while. -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |

I do use it for APRS when I travel on longer trips, for fun more than anything, If I had to purchase a replacement, I'd probably get the mobile TM-D710 vs another HT.
Enjoy the new radio! -- Tweaked your connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |

| reply to drjim I've got a D700 in my Jeep, with a Garmin 'hockey puck' GPS-18 on the roof. It works very well, and I really like it. I've also got a D710 at home that I occasionally for a cross-band link so some of my radio club members can get in to the 2M repeater we use for our Thursday night net. It also works very well. I doubt if I use more than 10% of the capabilities of either radio! -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |

Enjoy the new radio! Did you ever get the thing to do packet? I got it to at least recognize the Garmin GPSIII I bought with it ($200 at a hamfest) but it is driving me nuts. Enough to write an FAQ if I ever get it working.
I FINALLY got Hyperterminal to communicate with it but I am stuck from there.
I did look at the D72 at HRO in Delaware and I was tempted but I want either the Yaesu FT897 or FT857. |

GeekNJPremium join:2000-09-23 Waldwick, NJ | It worked fine for APRS and talks bidirectionally with my older Garmin 76CS. I don't recall if I had it hooked up to UI-View32 early on but I think I did that. Didn't try other packet through it that I recall. |
|
 | I FINALLY got the thing to work. Had to set up Hyperterminal properly (8 - N - 1) and Xon/Xoff and put it into monitor mode and saw a lot of APRS traffic bouncing around.
Now I wish I could get the thing to do a list of APRS stations and positions. |

|
 | There is a LIST button but I thought that was only when it was in APRS mode and not in TNC mode.
I would like to access that list on my system. |

| Best way is to try it, but since the TNC in the D7 is pretty much a "standard" TNC, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've read where people are using the D7 as a packet radio 'station', and except for a few missing commands (I forget which ones), it worked OK. -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |
|
 | I tried to work packet but couldn't find a BBS to connect to but I did get it to work in monitor mode and it did pick up some APRS traffic but that's it. |

drjimPremium,MVM join:2000-06-13 Long Beach, CA kudos:3 | Yeah, even out here in L.A. there aren't any packet BBS's left. Seems like nothing but DX clusters anymore.... -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |
