1 edit | img tag discouraged? Part of the fun of smilies and images is in how they appear in the post. If using `[att=]` bbcode, I don't see how to get it aligned to text; it always gets a new line, centered.
At some point, I used the quote button to see how some privileged poster had got this alignment choice accomplished, noticed, iirc `img src="... border="0"..` sort of thing and made an img tag with that, which worked.
Subsequently, just now, I did the same with a little gif, fits nicely at the end of a line of text, and Preview showed it such. However, when I posted, something converted this to the bbcode `[att=]` paradigm, with my intended alignment lost.
Does this make sense, can someone enlighten me? Thanks. |

 | Re: img tag discouraged? Thanks, I didn't know that, it's something. However, if the text line doesn't go all the way over to the right, in the case of right-aligned attachment, for example, there is a big space from end of text to the picture that is right-justified. Maybe linking to off-site images is not allowed. |

 | Used to be able to do it with no problem... haven't tried lately. This is supposed to show up "in-stream". Looks fine on Preview... looks fine upon posting (of course, it's a small image). -- "Sorry for not responding to your post, but either I haven't seen it yet, or what you said was so devoid of substance that I found it utterly uninteresting." |

Ok, I'm looking at the quote of your post, doesn't even have the border attribute, which I had concluded was the missing link when my simple img tag was coughed up, idk, try this again... ....now to preview...looks good, and.... |

 | reply to mod_wastrel Preview looked fine, inline. After "Post Now", it's converted to att bbcode, wtf |
|
 | Not sure why it would be doing that for your posts. (account issue? as in, level/capabilities? site being hot-linked to?) You could try uploading a few emoticons to your gallery here and link to one of those instead, to see if there's a difference. (There are extensions and user scripts for Firefox that you can use to insert smileys and stuff into text using whatever format is appropriate for the site you're on. I used to use one or two of those here--they all worked fine [back then].) -- "Sorry for not responding to your post, but either I haven't seen it yet, or what you said was so devoid of substance that I found it utterly uninteresting." |

 | I was wondering if it's an account level, un-premium sort of thing. Thanks for the suggestions. |

 | Yeah, but "smileys" are designed to be hot-linked in the first place (being small and typically used by IM apps). For me, the ones provided by BBR are usually fine, which is why I haven't done much of that in quite awhile. Of course, that wouldn't explain why I can still do it OK and someone else can't (presuming the same syntax is being used--a plain old html img tag). -- "Sorry for not responding to your post, but either I haven't seen it yet, or what you said was so devoid of substance that I found it utterly uninteresting." |

It's a good thing because it means in five years when your smiley-face website is down, the images here will still work.

edit: I did some tests.
When an image gets auto-attached: -When you use bbcode OR html tags and PREVIEW your post -When you edit a post and preview it
When images get hotlinked: -When you use bbcode or html tags and click Post Now or I'm feeling Lucky(This behavior has to be a bug) -When you link to an image hosted on dslreports (main domain or dslr.net)
Really, you shouldn't hotlink just because you want your layout to look prettier. And off-site emoticons are tacky anyway. -- »[Info] The DSLR Orangeface extension 2.0! |

 | Well, clearly, not "everything" gets auto-uploaded (or my small Yahoo! emoticon would have been, which it wasn't [which is the only thing that makes this topic something for the curious]). And if Yahoo! is gone five years months weeks days hours from now, then I could care less.

Oh yeah, that's weird. I doubt Justin would have put in a size check as well, but maybe he did.
How did you post it, exactly? (qreply? html or bbcode, did you preview?) -- »[Info] The DSLR Orangeface extension 2.0! |

 | I never use qreply. I used html, did a preview, did an edit, all with the same results: hot-linked just fine.
Edit: the smiley I used above isn't even the largest image of those in this thread, so it's likely not an image size constraint. |

Right, but it is the smallest image (in terms of pixels, not filesize). It's possible that anything over x pixels wide/tall gets uploaded. -- »[Info] The DSLR Orangeface extension 2.0! |

3 edits | That sounds even weirder (but then I'd expect such from you, Weirdal ).
Edit: let's see... this is "bigger" (dimensions): (I'm not listening! ) ...OK, maybe that is it. Cool, if it is (though not especially "helpful" to members**).
(**This would appear to be about formatting and not bandwidth, but "double-wide" emoticons don't actually screw-up formatting at all. If it's that kind of x+y size issue, then I think the control should be modified a bit to allow the somewhat larger emoticons ['cause they really shouldn't have to be uploaded to DSLR to be used -- unless DSLR wants to create a new gallery for everyone to use]. ) |

| reply to berserken The only time I can get proper hotlink behavior (like it used to be maybe 6+ months back) is when I use quickpost instead of regular. None of the other methods seem to really work for me.
There are some legitimate reasons for this IMHO. One being dynamic images (like graphs) that you want to show up to date info and not just what they were during the time of posting. IE:
