| Skins (of course :) ) Just feeling a little smug if I am allowed to feel that way, and have a question
Gotta quote something I said/saw back in August from this thread »Re: 4 Days till pigskin
quote: That is two trades of D-line Holliday/Hightower and Jarmon to Broncos for WR Gaffney. Carter and Albert now Pats (and Albert has missed 4 practices/undisclosed, what else is new) Clearing out 4-3 type players, we may not recognize a bunch early on, but I guarantee the D will be a lot more fun to watch, just so many extra/different things you can do from a 3-4. On a 4 man pass rush, the 4th rusher can come from anywhere and be a choice of several players.
Grobinette is right, it is pre-season, I don't expect to see much more than plain vanilla, it is just time to learn the players, and begin the process of identifying them without having to see their number... probably the first one most of us will be able to "know" is Orakpo, and Cofield's size should make him a quick gimmie.
Real nice to see Hightower and Gaffney contribute for 2 4-3 defenders that wouldn't have been great help to us.
But my question to Skins fans is.... Was the D a lot more fun to watch? (now if we can repeat this against Dollass )
I'm serious, what did you think? I'm used to it up here watching the Ravens.... I don't think I've had as much fun watching the Skins D since Butz, Mann, Manley...... -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. Bleah |

Who's the genius who made those brilliant assessments? Identify that man!!
Good call, Doc.
One game does not a season make, but as I said over in the Sports forum-- if you're a Redskins fan, you gotta love what you saw today. I know I sure did.
These were the 'anti-Redskins'. Everything that had been happening to them over the past ten or 12 years seemed to be happening for them today. They looked like an actual pretty good football team. Incredibly refreshing.
Probably not a Superbowl contender, but simply being a competitive and fully professional-looking team week in and week out would be a major step forward. |

| reply to Rxdoxx The Bear was not only pleased with them for yesterday's performance, but thought he died and went to Football Loving Man's Heaven when they dropped in on the Niners with the end zone return TD, a sack, and another end zone return TD in something like over a minute on the game clock. Oh, and Cal won on Saturday. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

| reply to Rxdoxx Skins did pretty good, so I heard. It's been a very interesting first week of football. As I suspected, the pre-season turmoil has really shaken the teams up. I didn't watch the skins play and only watched bits of the Ravens game. Week two should be a really good week to watch for both of these teams.
Me? I'm kinda looking forward to seeing my Patriots play tonight. I'm hoping the changes they made on defense were the correct ones. -- »www.jrslaterphotography.com/

| reply to Rxdoxx Of course one could throw a wet blanket on this and remind everyone that they did win the season opener last year too.
I didn't watch, but from all appearances they played a competent game which is a far cry from most of what we have been seeing for the last few years. -- There's nothing like good food, good wine, and a bad girl |

| Yes, for fans, "hope springs eternal" and there is always the new optimism as the season starts and then it gets crushed as reality unfolds.
This year is different I don't know how good they are going to be, and I'm not tooting superbowl, but I'm saying this is a different team from that we have had. Shanahan is stamping his character on the make-up of it. What, 27 players from last year? means 26 are gone. There is a different attitude to the whole team, you answer to him, there is no going behind the coaches back ala Portis telling Snyder it is either Spurrier or me! Those kinds of egos are gone or under wraps by the players themselves.
Getting Hightower brought in the Shanahan type of RB that we grew used to seeing in Denver... a kind of unknown who looked all pro for a year or two.
OL is the best it has been in years. Chris Chester is a nice addition. A second round pick by the Ravens, Chris is good and skilled but wasn't what the Ravens wanted. Ravens now have Marshall Yanda back inside, a slobber-knocking road grader in the running game. Chester is a more agile "finesse" player who can quickly move and seal off, exactly what is needed in a zone blocking scheme. Zone blocking relies on getting a crease opened and a back being able to get there and use it, it is not blow/tear a hole in the line as the Ravens like to be able to do. But it is effective when done right (there is a small window of time when it exists), and Chester is a very nice fit.
You are right, they played a competent game. I don't know how they will do against the elite teams, I think they are still a couple of players short, but they are going to beat teams they should, no more going to Detroit and giving them their only win of the season.
And this defense is goint to be fun to watch. Reed Doughty had numbers but not a great game, need Landry. I like Reed but he has no chance of ever being thought of in the same words with pro bowl. -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. Bleah |

| I'm not a naysayer by any means. I would like nothing more than to see the Redskins claw their way out of the hole that has been dug by Snyder and company to actually be a "team" as well as become a contender. -- There's nothing like good food, good wine, and a bad girl |

| said by grobinette:I'm not a naysayer by any means. I would like nothing more than to see the Redskins claw their way out of the hole that has been dug by Snyder and company to actually be a "team" as well as become a contender. Vinny Cerrato (who played 'Robin' to Snyder's 'Batman', apparently) no longer makes football personnel decisions. That alone was the first major step in the right direction.
Shanahan now has a team full of players he mostly likes for his system. Shanahan may not be Vince Lombardi reincarnate, but he's a proven head coach-- and now the team personnel decisions are being made by he and Bruce Allen, not by a lackey and his roto-team boss.
Regardless of what their record might turn out to be this year, the Redskins now look a lot more like a team that's going to show up to play hard and smart on both sides of the ball, and do what the coaches tell them to rather than only what they feel like doing.
That's the refreshing new look we haven't seen for a number of years. |
