| Are many high-tech companies opening new jobs in rural areas IBM opened new data center in Dubuque, Iowa. They started it about 1-2 years ago.
I realize it makes sense, giving lower cost of operating customer service centers but don't you find it a little bit odd of this being open in middle of nowhere in a small town? The town is at least 90 miles away from Madison, Wi and 180 miles from Chicago. The closest interstate highway is 70 miles away. There is no any freeway at all between Dubuque and Chicago for half of the trip (one lane country road through few small villages).
How is this supposed to attract young work force? Let alone this throws off tech-savy people who like to watch hulu or netflix because such areas tend to be served by internet service providers such as mediacom that have really bad service (slow speed, frequent outages). There are no modern telecommunication and infrastructure upgrades. There is no nightlife or social life benefits provided by big cities. |
|
 | It will attract people who are sick of cities and all the problems that come along with them, or like living in a rural environment. A friend of mine moved to Ceder Rapids and got a programming job there, but that largely because his wife is from there and she wanted to return home to spawn.
And a data center does not need a large workforce to keep it going. It's not like they need to hire hundreds of people with 10 years experiance, most of the work can probably be done by people with minimal computer skills. |

IBM and Dubuque outlined their plans to partner in the development of new "smarter" technologies and implementation strategies to create an international model of sustainability for communities of 200,000 and under, where over 40 percent of the U.S. population resides. Dubuque, a city that is recognized as a national leader in sustainability with its forward-thinking public policy, together with IBM, will address the ever-increasing demands of cities to deliver vital services such as energy and water management, and transportation, all while reducing the community's impact on the environment.
"The goal of this collaboration is to develop and pilot a systematic mechanism to give consumers and businesses the information they need to make informed decisions about how they consume resources like electricity, water, natural gas, and oil," said Robert Morris, vice president, IBM Research. "To create such a mechanism, a partnership is needed between a community with a track record of successful public-private partnerships, citizens and businesses that believe in sustainability, and enterprises like IBM that have the information technology and knowledge to apply to this transformative partnership."

| reply to chgo_man99 I looked in to working there. It is a service center more than a data center. The servers are hosted in other places, in Dubuque are only the tech who manage them remotely. They support it seems like every product possible from there. As companies outsource their IT departments the technical work is done there and like centers around the world. |

Of course this is in no way an indicator of intelligence. I have my wifes family as evidence |

 | reply to VegasMan With the exception of des moines and iowa city, there is no much culture in iowa. |

 | reply to sleuth If you eliminated from average poor segregated minority students with no access to good schools, iowa would me in the middle somewhere of rank. I say rankings are biased. |

Anyway, this is not how you complete a statistical analysis. |

At least it used to be that way twenty years ago. |

1 edit | said by sleuth:said by Jon:fixed. At least it used to be that way twenty years ago. hahaha what the hell happened!? I haven't seen one yet. I dunno. I had a friend that lived in Bettendorf. Right over the bridge just past Moline IIRC. I used to go out there almost every weekend. This was when the President Riverboat Casino first opened. I think it was the first one in the area.
We'd go there and gamble until we were broke or got kicked out for being to smashed then go hit all strip clubs. There were two where you had to bring your own beer. the others where little shit-holes where the girls would actually do their thing on the bar. They were pretty sleezy. It was 20+ years ago so I don't remember the exact area.
Sorry for trashing up your thread btw chgo_man99 . |
