[General] Earthlink outage in California?

My internet connection has been down for almost 24 hours. After several attempts at contacting tech support at Earthlink, they finally said that there was an outage in my region. I can't find any info about this outage anywhere. As usual Earthlink has no info on their website about any outage. Is anybody else experiencing any connection problems with Earthlink?

Thanks

Yes, mine has been out for 23 hours. Tech support said this morning it was a problem on their end and would be fixed "soon." They just said the same thing a few minutes ago. They're blaming AT&T and said it's affecting California

www.earthlink.net could not be found.
$ ping earthlink.net
ping: unknown host earthlink.net

POP mail not working, 'lookup' not returning anything, this a.m. in Oakland, CA

Just about to "Post Now!" and POP mail came to life, DNS is working, earthlink.net loads, like throwing a switch. wot?

I get two different IPs when using your example and the actual "www." prefixed FQDN.

ping earthlink.net

Well, the import of my post was there was no resolution of anything Earthlink, afaict, for the cited attempts, during the time I was making the post and right up to where I was about to actually post it, at which time, resolution and availability of earthlink.net as a web entity returned, all of a sudden, in all of the tests I cited, albeit the ping was not answered:

$ ping earthlink.net
PING earthlink.net (209.86.93.208) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- earthlink.net ping statistics ---
11 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 9999ms

Other hosts were resolving/"known", it goes without saying, I would think, inasmuch as I was posting to dslreports.com

Yes, I fully understood your point that there was no DNS resolution one moment and then like a switch was thrown on there was resolution to the previously seen "unknown host" error.

Ok, thanks. My comprehension is limited, just a messenger. I guess it might be maintenance-related but it's just a guess. IDK if the different IP addys for slightly different domain names suggests anything. Some perspective of how this happens/how it works would be a plus.

The 'example.org' IP address is an 'A' record DNS entry for a generic domain. Large entities often provide this record without actually having a host with content at the listed IP address; redirecting to another host (which may be a 'CNAME' rather than an 'A' record), which contains actual content. So which to ping depends upon what you wish to diagnose. Connectivity to content servers should probably use the 'www.example.org' host name, instead of the 'example.org' host name.

Thanks for the pointer. That and Wikipedia have got me a little farther along the road to understanding.
