| Looks Like They've Split I think the hummingbirds have left town for the season. Most of August it was like Grand Central Station there. There was a steep drop-off in visitation last week, and I haven't seen any so far this week. Seems to be about the same time as last year. I'll keep the feeder up until the end of the month for any stragglers that happen by. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

| Still some here but it looks like the males have gone. The females will be next and then any of their chicks that are left will figure it out. They had a big feeding frenzy after all the rain, which is a sign that they are stoking up for the big trip south.
Leaving the feeder up for the stragglers or any passers by from up north is good idea. -- There's nothing like good food, good wine, and a bad girl |

seaquakePremium,MVM join:2001-03-23 Millersville, MD | reply to DC DSL Still have 'em here. We had a female sitting on a shepards hook for most of Irene. She's been around and hitting the feeder even as of today. I don't recall seeing males lately so I don't think the females will be here much longer. |

| I have only been looking every now and then, but going by the level of the nectar not having changed since Tuesday morning, I'm pretty sure they've cleared out of Dupont Circle. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

| You said you had seen them around on April 14 and I didn't see any until April 23.
So it would seem that your birds are on an earlier arrival and departure schedule.
Mine were heavy going at it yesterday and when I came home their feeder was just about dry. I gave it a good cleaning and a fill up and they went right back at it. -- There's nothing like good food, good wine, and a bad girl |

| I miss looking out the balcony door or having coffee out there and seeing the little guys...Guzzler and his constant efforts to keep others away from "his" stash, and the others' sneaking in and pigging out regardless. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

| reply to DC DSL Oh! We just saw one (presumably a female)...were sitting out there and there it was, hovering off the balcony. We came inside...don't want to discourage her. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

I thought ours were gone too. But three decided to stick around and get the last of the butterfly flower clusters. We have two large butterfly bushes. Late this afternoon three hummingbirds were feeding on the flowers. Guess they are use to us because in these shots I was about 3-5 feet from them. |

| Great pics. Most of ours tolerated our presence...Guzzler, Hopper, Hoveround, Flitzy and Ditzy would do a criss-cross buzz-around to make sure you knew they were there and then feed. There was a slew of others that came and went as well, some that could care less if we were outside, some that would give you the skunk eye to leave so they could feed. My balcony's pretty small (about 5x10) so there isn't all that much clearance. The Regulars would get nervous if we were sitting out there and were even an inch closer than what they considered "acceptable." Silly birdies. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

| With a lot of patience you can get them used to you being there and eventually hand feed them.

pbvan join:2003-02-09 Fairfax, VA | reply to DC DSL Thanks. Ours mainly just fly around the flowers on the bushes which each one is about 6ft wide. I don't have a feeder for them. There are three bird hoppers in the yard and the finches, cardinals and doves hang there all year long.
grobinette, that is a cool video however don't think I want them feeding from my hands. |
