[connectivity] Very bad ping spikes

Hi, so I was wondering if there is anyway to fix my ping spikes im getting, i play online video games and usually in the morning and after noon my ping is fairly normal but around 6-8PM pst i start getting huge and constant ping spikes in ventrillo, and online games. I also get randomly dced. I called fairpoint and they gave me a new router and im still having the same problems. my phone isin't connected to a dsl filter or whatever those things are called, also i do sometimes get these spikes in the morning and afternoon but it is alot more rare, and sometimes i don't get the huge ones at night, but overall there is something really wrong, really bad packetloss and low bandwith. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how i could fix it or if i should give my isp another call, oh and i've also ran virus checks and haven't found anything, thanks in advance

My usual drill in the AT&T DSL forums is to request the modem stats; things like the SNR, Attenuation, modem synch speeds, and such.

Time for a little troubleshooting.

Is there a reason you are not using a DSL filter on your phone? All non-DSL devices should be behind a filter either a per device in-line filter or a whole house POTS/DSL splitter.

Take a look at modem stats in good times and bad. What you are looking for is sync speed and margin. If that is consistent problem is not the DSL circuit itself. If that varies significantly try connecting the DSL modem/router directly to the phone company NID test jack. That will disconnect inside wiring eliminating that as a source of the problem. Assuming you live in a single family home the NID should be near the electric meter. If you have an old house, pre circa 1980 you may not have one.

Do traceroute (tracert in Windows) to stable sites like this one during good times and bad. What you should see is a gradual increase in latency with distance and hop count. Sudden unexplained jumps typically indicate problem with that hop of the previous. You can do the same kind of test in the other direction by using the Line Quality test on the Tools page.

If you have trouble analyzing the result post them here and someone will explain them to you.
