[Hockey] 2011-2012 Ottawa Senators Season Thread

It's a new season, with training camp opening, so it's time for a new thread.

A few quick notes:

1) all players from the rookie camp have been invited to the main camp
2) main camp is divided into three teams: Boschman, Marsh, Kyte (nod to 20th anniversary of 1st team)

Training camp should be interesting with so many players looking for places on the big team. I don't put it beyond Bryan Murray to make a trade before the season starts to open either a forward spot or one on the blue line. The B-Sens Calder championship and the rookie camp have shown there is a lot of potential in the younger members of the organization, and the Sens played well in the last 20 games of the season.

Most interesting tidbit, courtesy of this article:

On the topic of money, Melnyk is still pursuing the grievance he filed with the NHL regarding Dany Heatley’s $4-million bonus, paid on July 1, 2009, after Heatley declined a potential trade to the Edmonton Oilers.

Melnyk’s biggest concern regarding Heatley, he said, is that the Minnesota Wild winger still has the means to pay back the bonus when (not if) Melnyk wins the case, once it’s finally heard.

“That’s going to continue on. It’s taking so long, it’s ridiculous,” Melnyk said. “The hearing … hopefully one day you get it and the guy doesn’t blow all his money, that he’s got money to pay back. So, I just want to make sure he has got the money around when he has got to pay us back.”

GO GET HIM EUGENE! THE ENTIRE FAN BASE IS BEHIND YOU ON THIS ONE!

And so many 1-way contracts in place. Even if they trade or eat 1 or 2 of them, there's still a very limited number of spots available for those still trying to break into the pros.

One of the early line combinations being reported at this morning's practice is Filitov - Spezza - Butler; I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this as the 1st line to start the season, given how 19-16 had some good chemistry to end the last season.

Just for one scrimmage, I want to see:

Petersson - Zibanejad - Alfredsson
Rundblad - Karlsson

Team Sweden!

The Rosters for the teams are here

When I saw them, I assumed that the Filatov, Spezza, Butler line would be made...

I see Alfie, ZBad and Michalek on a line

Oh and the forwards on Team Marsh are rather underwhelming

Haha, nice tidbit about Heatley. I hope they get him and he has to pay it back.

So I'm looking at Spezza in a couple of pools this year............is this his breakout season or does he continue his lethargic pace?

I don't like the shoulder crests, but the rest of it looks great. So much for he 'big reveal' during Fanfest on Oct 1st.

Pre-season game #1 tonight against the blue team. According to one report, the shallower nets will be used in the game to see what the 'more space behind the net' looks and works like.

Notes:

1) Auld / Lehner to split game at 30 minutes each
2) Lessard, Konopka, Neil, Smith (no Carkner) will all dress -- could be a 'spirited affair'
3) Forward lines: Filatov-Regin-Butler, Michalek-Zibanejad-Stone, Greening-Smith-Neil, Hoffman-Konopka-Lessard
4) Blue line: Kuba-Karlsson, Wiercioch-Conboy, Cowen-Runblad

Yeah, I expect I'll be asking for one for Christmas - and if I don't get one, running out to buy one on Boxing Day.

Meh...it's pre-season. I'm more interested to see if the league looks at that Phaneuf headshot on Conboy.

i doubt it...it was incidental contact to the head, at least how i saw it...Conboy should never lower himself like that as the hit was going to be in the chest...either way, it looked like Conboy twisted around at the last second to prevent it from being a direct hit...i tried finding a youtube clip of it, but nothing seems to be available yet.
