The Dv8orJust call me Dong Suck Oh, M.D.Premium join:2001-08-09 Denver, CO | Driving from Denver to Vegas for Thanksgiving Hey all.... Im relatively new to the Mile High, and Im planning to drive to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. I know the weather west of Denver can be wicked crazy. What are the chances that I-70 going west will be open and not shut down due to some snowstorm? Just trying to get an idea of what to expect, or if I should just not even consider the drive and fly there instead. I'd really rather drive, but the last thing I want to do is spend Thanksgiving holed up in some high school gym on a cot because Im a snow refugee. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

| Dv8or You never know what i70 can be like.. It can close for the weather or a dumb tourist can also shut the road down to not knowing how to drive in the snow or it can be super slow !! you just never know. I would fly, But heck if you get pulled off at silverthorne you can go Skiing at keystone or at A-basin witch in my eyes would be better then LV.. Or You can always go the South route on i40 to stay away from the snow but remember you have to come back as well !! Hope that helps... I been here 5 years and never wish for snow anymore ,If you wish you WILL get i know this for sure !! |

The more people in this area I talk to, the more Im going towards buying a plane ticket for this particular trip. Damnit. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

 | If you want to see The High country you need to go NOW and see all the colors , But when the snow starts flying all bets are off.. What forum did you come from I have seen your name b4 ? |

I have some 23,000 posts in the past 10 years. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

But, there is no way to tell if a freak Blizzard will occur, especially since I-70 west of Denver is a very high elevation. I've also noticed big weather changes after you get past the tunnel. I've also been stuck on that road in perfect weather.
Check out »www.cotrip.org/home.htm and the weather before you leave.
If you are really worried, you can always take I-25S to I-40W to US-93N -- What smells like blue? |

I've made that mistake before. Snow was just as bad or worse on I-40, semis jackknifed everywhere, they closed I-40 just after I got through. Besides the fact that it is a much longer route (1,100 miles from Denver, vs 750 via I-70).
Your best bet is to follow the weather and road reports and stay informed. Thanksgiving isn't normally one of the heavier snowfall times of the year. -- Don't touch that, it's the history eraser button you fool! |

The Dv8orJust call me Dong Suck Oh, M.D.Premium join:2001-08-09 Denver, CO | The problem with that is I need to make flight reservations way in advance, so weather reports cant really come into play if I have to decide now what to do. Im pretty sure Ive decided to fly. Such is life--I can drive another time. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

 | What about Amtrak ? |

The Dv8orJust call me Dong Suck Oh, M.D.Premium join:2001-08-09 Denver, CO | Looks like there's no easy train service between the two cities. It would involve buses and about 2 days of travel time. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

Flying will be just fine. You can get really cheap tickets, if you fly Alligence Air out of Fort Collins/Loveland, tickets are as low as $69/one way to Vegas. -- What smells like blue? |

I've taken Amtrak from Pueblo to Kansas City, the Southwest Chief, and I'm pretty sure it goes to Vegas too. It was pretty empty, so I don't know about viable, but it exists. There's another train from Denver -> Grand Junction -> Reno -> SF too
EDIT: »www.amtrak.com/servlet/BlobServe···_P03.pdf Here's the train I rode, it does actually go to Vegas ... hrm, now I want to go to Vegas. |
