I think it's more that L2TP/IPSEC, OpenVPN and SSTP are more secure protocols. Not to take away from PPTP as many use it. Especially given the device compatibility and performance. As you mention some is better than none. Especially when securing public connections.
I've having a problem setting up this VPN connection. I tried in windows, but it failed. So I setup a Ubuntu 10.10 vm. Tried in there and it failed. Here is the output from syslog:
