Re: Canadian ISP Summit said by Guspaz:Well, don't forget too that it was the government that prompted the CRTC to re-examine this. If Bell goes to the government to complain, the government may not be receptive, and Bell knows that.
Peter Nowak thinks that it's unlikely that Bell will appeal to government, although they may challenge in court. RIIIGHT they get 13 times what they did the day before and they'd appeal to get less i see....hows insanity at your church today.... |

| The decision to appeal or not will be extremely complex, and there are procedural implications. If Bell appeals 703 and puts a stop to it, it affects all the other incumbents.
So it is more likely that This decision will stand and rates will get implemented and then Bell and/or others will submit Part 1 to ask to change the rates. |

I priced out the cost of a typical 25/7 service with a 100GB average (which seems to be in the ballpark of where we are now) $10 markup for the ISP to make a profit. It'd cost about $20 a month less than I'm paying now for the same service.
But if you want to try to claim that 48 / 68 = 20, be my guest. -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |

Bell Canada had, BY far, the best gift, and the most geek porn. Next message follows (since DSLR won't allow us to put text above pictures |

With such gifts, you too would start to love Bell.
And yes, there was Juniper porn/catalogues. But it would not be appropriate to post them here |

Damn and our booth was right next door to them - I never got one of those nifty kits lol I did offer their friendly Bell folks some of our brochures though hehehe |

 | reply to jfmezei May be they want you get strip searched at the airport. (Exploding Made in China products joke somewhere). Looks like you can get most of them from DX online.
I am not so crazy about those external retractable dongles on my mouse cable. I would have been great if the retractable part is inside the mouse like those old vacuum cleaners do with their retractable cords. |
|
 | Looks like item 34728 at DX is the same thing sans logo.
Rule #14: Don't bring weird geek stuff in your carry-on. This includes of course, the duct taped DIY rebuilt spare battery pack for your laptop. |

| It is funny. I never even thought about this kit looking "strange" in the X-rays. I was susprised that they had us take off our shoes. I thought that silliness had ended.
Since it is quite likely that other attendees to the conference hadgone through before me, the x-ray operator had probbaly gotten used to that kit by the time I went though.
And to Mr Stewart: sorry we dodn't get to meet and chat. And thanks for the wi-fi and IPv6. |

LOL - offered before but couldn't get much interest Even told some folks (other than just Bell) that we *give away* free IPv6 transit and no interest.... usually "free" gets folks excited about stuff.... |

jfmezeiPremium join:2007-01-03 Pointe-Claire, QC kudos:22 | CRTC published Len Katz keynote speech at the ISP summit.
(the one that I had recorded).
|
 | The crux of Katz's speech is this bit:
"In August 2010, the Commission stated that we would consider phasing out the requirement for large companies to provide high-speed access services to independent ISPs when wireless and satellite services became viable substitutes. There is some debate as to when this will occur, but I believe it will come more quickly than many anticipate.
For me, this example demonstrates that the CRTC is committed to ensuring that regulations keep pace with changes in the marketplace.
It also underscores that independent ISPs need to secure a respected position within the telecommunications food chain. They should not grow too comfortable within the current wholesale regime. Instead they should strive to become more relevant to their customers, their suppliers and their partners." Indies are going to have to pool resources to offer fiber-fed low-power neighbourhood LTE or something equivalent. None of them singly will be able to afford thousands of pole fees to mount this stuff, nor will any of them have sufficient subscriber density (except in rare instances) to afford the fiber-backhaul from thousands of neighbourhoods in hundreds of communities.
In not so many years from now none of them will be able to say that they have not been warned by the CRTC. |

Nor will any of them be able to afford the spectrum, Robellus will outbid them in a heartbeat. -- It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what? |

| reply to MaynardKrebs I find it funny they seem to think satellite and wireless are truly viable alternatives..
EDIT: Hell, Blizzard won't even provide support for those with wireless or satellite connections due to the problems inherent in those types of connections. |
