I would rather bid for the property and turn it into a ham's dream house.

Yea but its Florida. Much like Washington its not a rare state. Id rather move to something like MT or WY .

Besides ham radio, Florida is GOD's Waiting room. I dont wanna live there just yet. Who knows when he would come out and say to me NEXT.

I would rather get a house up in NH or VT in the mountains. There's a reason why the top 10 in contests are dominated by W1's.

I don't know if W1 land is the optimal place for a contest station. (Depends a lot on the contest, and the bands). There are some mighty K5 stations in Texas, which kick butt during domestic contests such as ARRL Sweepstakes.

There are some good W1 contest stations, and even more W1 contest ops. (I'm fortunate to know a few, and learn from them). I believe part of the equation as to why there is such strength in the area is due to it being the incubator of radio and television development so many years ago. Many of the contest ops I know either work in the radio industry (as engineers), or came out of the area's top engineering colleges.

You don't really have that density of interested contest ops, with the real estate to set up a good contest station, in many other places in the USA.

I spent 8 wonderful years in Maine (KB1AQ) Id go back there if I could find the right real estate. Problem is they are so expensive and when the housing market went boom you need too much of a down payment.

That and the XYL doesnt want to go back. She wants to stay here. I prefer to get the heck out of Washington. Its fast becoming Kalifornia or Taxachussetts II.

I should say that I am primarily interested in DX contests, not domestic ones and for those the W1s dominate - CQWW, ARRL DX, CQ WPX are the major ones I take part in.

There is no doubt that the geography has a lot to do with it. The band opens earlier and stays open longer in W1 to where it matters - Europe, plus W1s are louder than other areas.

But W2 is giving them some competition as W2RE set up his superstation in Summit, NY. W3 shines as well with K3LR and NN3W(@N3HBX). But it is rare to see anybody on the west coast in the top 10. Sometimes you see the midwest in there but there is no doubt that the top 10 is dominated by W1.

If you didn't want to live there, that site looks like it would make one hell of a remote base. Too bad it appears that it's only the tower that's for sale.

It might be a bit noisy, since it's at an electrical substation..

They must've modified the description since this was posted... I just saw it for the first time now, and its now a 160' tower. Dang inflation...

This is literally up the road from my home. If it stays at $20 I might bite. My only issue is the $2000 bond that needs to be put up.

I also wonder, the city is going to disassemble the sections, but to what extent? Simply unbolting 10ft lengths and setting them on the ground, requiring me to then disassemble each section down to its parts for transport?

I for dang sure dont need it, but a nice self-supporter would be much better than the 180' of 25G thats still sitting in the yard, unassembled, as I learned that guying would be impossible on my property.

Basically, I have nothing of value to add to this thread. I simply wanted to post since its been awhile since I've done so.

Yes, that's quite a description change.. Before you had to disassemble and had to have a 5 mil insurance bond, to do so.

Typically these will come apart into 20' sections.
