[Newsgroups] Hong Kong based server?

I know this is a US dominated board, but thought I would try my luck here as there is quite a bit of information about newsgroups here.

I'm based in Hong Kong and have a 10 MB/s connection, but that is only within Hong Kong. Connections abroad are generally limited to 2 MB/s.

I know that Giganews has a HK server and I've tested it out. I can pretty much max out my connection with Giganews.

Obviously Giganews isn't the cheapest option out there. My previous ISP allowed for a maximum of 3 MB/s and I was able to max that out with the likes of Astraweb, Blocknews, etc.

I'm wondering, apart from Giganews, are there any other usenet providers which offer an HK server (Supernews, aka Giganews reseller at cheaper price, at first said they offered an HK server, but then turned round and said they don't offer one any more).

Thanks!

I've been keeping an eye out for a provider with Asian presence for as long as I can remember. Giganews' node is just about it, and that's probably cause they have deep pockets.

Bandwidth in Asia is quite costly, hence making it unattactive for Usenet companies to set up nodes here.

That sucks. Why is it so expensive?

9/3/11 Looks like I am right they know that I know and keep getting scared. Time for Test 2. Every time it happens too they give me more power! Thanks. These experiments are quite fun and interesting. Rooting them out is a lot easier than I thought.

It's a supply and demand thing.
Compared to N.America and Europe, Asia has far less continental fiber connections and peering going around.
So bandwidth (or more accurately, international bandwidth) becomes a scarce resource. What happens next is covered in Economics 101.

I'm confused. Residential bandwidth in Asia is dirt cheap but commercial bandwidth is uber expensive?

Commercial bandwidth is basically dedicated bandwidth (example, 100 Mbits port dedicated for local AND international traffic) whereas residential isn't dedicated.

I may have cheap residential 10Mbps ADSL2 in say, Taiwan.
Sure I can reach 1MB/s d/l from local servers, but pulling from a US or EU server will be slower - speed would be very much at the mercy of my ISP's traffic conditions.

There is little point in supplying massive bandwidth between the US and Asia as there is little demand for US or even English content for that matter.

Re: [Newsgroups] Hong Kong based server?

As above, I mentioned that my ISP caps foreign bandwidth.

I've been using usenet companies that use Readnews and Astra while with HKBN, and these were pretty much capped at 2 MB/s.

I know I could use Giganews without any cap (as they have an HK server), but its double the price of most other usenet providers.

However for some reason a bunch of Highwinds resellers (like Newsgroup Direct and Thundernews) are getting speeds up to 7-9MB/s.

Don't know how long that will last though, but got Thundernews for US$7.50 a month via black friday (missed out on the earlier sales), so can't really complain now.

That is good to hear.

Yeah Giganews is expensive. You have to remember too they have the most DMCA takedowns as well. Highwind resellers though are not that far behind.

Yep, aware, using AW as a filler.
