I have no idea what I am doing...

I am trying to help my wife by giving her new custom hair bow hobby/business a web presence.

At the moment, the setup is that she has a Facebook page where people will PM their orders and then pay via cash/check. We're considering using PayPal for payments, but have never used it for that purpose.

I really don't know where to begin. The more I research the more confused I get. If I knew what I was doing, I would register a domain, find hosting and possibly do sales via the site. However, since I don't know what I'm doing, all the domain and hosting options, not to mention the "e-commerce" payments, etc., have me at a loss.

I'm not sure what I'm hoping to get as far as replies to this post other than possibly some guidance/recommendations/tips that my google-fu has failed to yield.

Thanks in advance.

Let's start with the basics then!

You'll need a webhost and a domain. You can get them yourself separately, or to make things easier on you, you can register a new domain through your webhost. Almost every reputable host has a process to handle that for you.

If it's just a hobby right now (and you don't expect CNN type traffic), then you could probably slide by with a shared-hosting plan, and those are relatively inexpensive and usually come with a control panel to help manage the server side of the house, cPanel being the most popular. Then there's the added bonus of support from your host if you get in a jam.

I've had servers, shared, VPS and dedicated with SurpassHosting for years and years now, I highly recommend them. You can take a look at their shared plans here: »www.surpasshosting.com/hosting-s···ions.php

Now I'm not much up on the eCommerce side of the house, so someone else will have to chime in on that. In the interim, you could continue to take orders like you are now while you get your web presence fleshed out.

I have someone else wanting a web page. I advised and truthfully I would just stick with the facebook page, and set up either paypal or google checkout.

facebook would get way, way more exposure than what a website would get these days it seems.

You know you should have sent me an IM. I get time to play with my life and see people now and then.

I would also recommend Google Checkout: checkout.google.com they deposit directly in your checking account after a day or so in one big bundle with comparable transaction fee's to Paypal
