2Wire 2701HG-B disconnects when performing specific actions

Hello all,

Last week I was having trouble connecting to my wireless connection with my cell phone. Whenever I would switch from 3G to wireless, the 2Wire router would reset itself. After trying various settings, I resolved the problem by resetting the device completely (30-second reset).

Everything was working fine until a few days later when I turned on my Xbox 360 and the router reset itself again. Sometimes it just resets and reconnects normally and other times it would reconnect then when the Xbox tried signing in automatically, it would reset itself all over again.

I contacted AT&T and they told me they did not see anything wrong with my line and I have not added anything to my office that would create any interference. Everything was working fine before, so I do not know what is going on.

Could someone please help me solve this once and for all?

Thank you.

What you describe sounds eerily similar to what I troubleshot for my mother. Her 2701HG-B would reset itself whenever she turned on her wireless laptop, but the wired PC worked fine.

The problem turned out to be the notoriously unreliable power supplies that 2Wire ships with its gateways. I found that the power supply was delivering only 4.1 volts, which apparently was just enough to keep the unit running except when its wireless transmitter fired up.

I replaced the power supply with a spare I had from an old 1701HG, but I've no doubt it's just a matter of time before that one fails too (I've had three 2Wire power supplies fail on me personally, and I know of two other failures from friends/family).

You can buy a replacement power supply from AT&T for $10, or you may be able to get 2Wire to replace yours for free, as these power supplies are known to be very low quality and tend to fail after a few years of use.

I remember reading something similar that I found through searching on Google and the person recommended buying a Sony PSP A/C adapter since they claim they supply the same amount of power.

I would rather take my chances with that, as Sony makes quality products, but I just wanted to make sure if that would pose any problems.

It should be fine, and it's probably what I'll do next time around. From what I've read, the PSP power supply delivers 5 volts up to 2 amps. The 2Wire is rated for 1 amp, so at most you'd be using just half of the capacity of the PSP supply.

The Sony power supply is most likely a fine product, but it only has a two-pin power plug; the 2Wire power supply has a 3-pin plug (the third pin [AC Ground] is internally connected to the modem's surge-protection circuitry). So, nearby lightning and other such events could damage the modem's input circuitry if the original power supply is not used.

okay, thanks for the information, but is there another power supply that is safe to use that is NOT made by 2wire?

I am not aware of any other power supplies that are a direct replacement.

The later 2Wire power supplies (they have "2Wire" written on them in white ink [instead of red] and have a flat cord [instead of round] connecting them to the modem) are supposed to be an improved design and less subject to failure.

Edit: (Oops, wrong "Reply to:")

Powpowpowr: You just saved my family $90. Omfg. I love you. I have been beating my head against the wall for at least 12 total hours over the last 2 days, trying everything I possibly could and every troubleshooting tip I could google up, trying to fix our 2701, which would reboot itself continuously before it could connect every time more than 1 computer was connected to it. Absolutely nothing was working.

Googled one last time for tonight before we'd have resigned to replace it in the morning, with money we don't have, and happened across this thread.

Turns out we still had the old power supply from the last 2wire router which we had replaced a couple years ago, which had the same exact power specs, sitting right in the computer desk drawer (So glad we're such pack rats with these kind of things!). Annnd it's working perfectly now! I'm just really grateful because I have been pullin my hair out tryin to fix this for wayyy too many hours, getting absolutely nowhere with it, and would have never thought of it being the power supply if it weren't for your post there.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
