Does it do it with italic tags too ? Nope...

What about bold again ? Hmmm, now it's not...

I usually see all italics that way, first I've seen it happen with bold though.

I don't see it either, but I wonder if a stylesheet is vertically centering the bolded text at the bottom of the line with the smilie?

How do those two lines look?

How's the justification of the bolded words? Inline with the text, or slightly below?

It looks like Firefox is immune, but I was able to recreate it using Chrome and Safari.

There are a couple of factors that cause it: the presence of an inline graphic (smiley) and a bquote tag. If you take away one of those elements, the bolded text will appear normal.

If you look at this post »Re: Funny formatting with BOLD tag in a browser other than firefox, the bolded text should be offset just lower than the regular text.

Sorry, was not quite understanding what you said until your next post but the bold looks the same to me in both text. Not sure about the new firefox but have 3.6.23 here and have found it is fairly "forgiving" compared to some browsers.

FF is much more forgiving it seems. Or they have fixups built-in to make it seem that way. FF7 renders the page normally also.

When I posted the 'test' entries in this thread, I did think about the smiley possibly being a factor. I use Chrome and in your examples, the first sentence is fine. The second shows the same behavior, that is, the bolded word is offset down.

Ironically, justin seems to favor Chrome as doing things "properly" so I'm curious how this will turn out
