USG dyndns auto update not working?

It seems that the USG won't update the dyndns if there's no IP change. Free dyndns account needs to be updated once a month. The Zyxel 2 plus seems to update the dyndns every month even though the IP stays the same. But the the USG doesn't have the option to update the dyndns every month.

I am wondering if there is a CLI command to do that or something is broken.

I haven't done any of this, but there is evidently a ddns profile that one can create and modify with the CLI (see page 108). The possibly relevant subcommand is "ip_select".

You will need to download the CLI manual, if you haven't already.

Thank you for the reply. I checked the CLI manual but there's no command to do auto update every month.

The "ip-select" subcommand has three options: iface, auto, and custom. The guide provides no instruction on what these do, but the description for ip-select is:

"Sets the ip address update policy in the specified ddns profile."

"Update" seems close to what you want to do. Maybe a conversation with ZyXEL support is in order.

Thank you for your input again. There's a manual "update" button in the GUI, but the problem is that it can't be set to do auto update for a preset number of days.

This is why, at a minimum, you need to go into the CLI and do a "show ddns" and see what kind of ddns profile you have. Also, you need to find out what "custom" does, what "auto" does, etc., as a command for the "ip-select" sub command.

Just because the GUI doesn't provide an interface to everything doesn't mean you are necessarily excluded from accomplishing your goal. We just don't know at this point.

DynDNS Type (this is my guess what these mean ... it seems to be based on the old dyndns.org service offering)
- DynDNS - DNS for the free dyndns.com domains if you have dynamic IP
- DynDNS Static - DNS for the free dyndns.com domains if you have static IP
- DynDNS Custom - for custom domain i.e. your domain, not one of the free domains that dyndns.com offers

IP Address (this comes from ZyWall's help file)
- from interface - The IP address comes from the specified interface
- auto detected -The DDNS server checks the source IP address of the packets from the ZyWALL for the IP address to use for the domain name
- custom - user defined IP static address

Thanks Brano; your reasonable guess suggests that the ip-select sub command is not going to be helpful for this problem. Perhaps there is an automatic way to disconnect the router from the ISP at some interval and then reconnect, thereby potentially changing the IP address. Or maybe there is an undocumented CLI command that could help.

Just a though ... have a look at the ZySH scripting ... maybe you can script something (not sure if it can be scheduled though)

Thanks all for the inputs. The IP won't change if you just power cycle the modem and/or router. The MAC of the router needs to be changed to get a new IP.
Zywall 2+ can renew the dyndns automatically every month even the IP stays the same. I think USG programmer forgot about this feature.

If your IP is static then select static profile. This one should update the dyndns.com account once a month to ensure your account does not expire.

The problem is that I did not get a static IP. My dynamic IP (Comcast) stays the same for years though.

So why are you trying to setup dynamic dns updating when the IP stays the same for years?

Because it is not real static. It changed once years ago.

didn't update after one month
I tried to set the Dyndns update to "static", but nope, the USG did not update automatically after one month.

Guess it's a bug then ...suggest you report it to ZyXel.
