Re: USG dyndns auto update not working?

ZyXel forum is not monitored by Zyxel employees (at least that what they officially state) thus not a right place for submitting bugs. Subbest to call/e-mail their official support directly.

Thanks for the info. A user suggested run a shell script and schedule to run it monthly. It is a workable solution but I will submit a bug/feature request to Zyxel.

oversight by Zyxel. They should fix it.

Having the same problem. My free dyndns account was deleted because the zyxel did not update it in quite a while.

Did you submit this defect to ZyXEL? Were you given an SPR number?

Anyone try the USG 3.00 beta firmware? Does ZyXEL has fixed this DynDNS issue in USG 3.00 firmware?

Fwiw, the USG (20W in my case) doesn't renew with the dyndns site upon boot if the IP changed while the unit was off. If I shut down the USG and modem, install and boot the old 2WG in its place, start the modem and bring the network back up the 2WG recognizes a different IP assigned than when it was shut down. If I then do the same "in reverse" to replace the 2WG with the USG 20W the WAN IP address changes again, but the 20W doesn't recognize the change and update dyndns.

I cannot figure out how we're supposed to do this. I went to their web site and clicked on tech support -> contact us and filled out the form. I have a sneaking suspicion there is a more appropriate way. The information I submitted follows:

quote:
I am writing to report an apparent bug in the way the USG handles dydns support. Per the dyndns specifications the client (the USG in this case) is supposed to renew every so often (30 days?) even if the IP address doesn't change. Also, the client should 'remember' its last IP address when it is shut down so it can report a change to dyndns when it starts back up. The USG doesn't do this properly either. The old ZyNOS routers (at least the 2WG I owned) handled these issues properly. See »USG dyndns auto update not working? for a discussion on this issue.

I can't figure out again where I found the this document on the dyndns site, so I've included the .pdf itself and the following information is from pg 17-18 of this document.

quote:
The client should store the IP of the last update in memory. It is not required to store the date and time of the last update.

The client should store the last update IP, along with the return code, in non-volatile memory, and not update on device start-up unless the IP is different.

The client may update 28 days after the last update to prevent expiration in Dynamic DNS. Due to the difficulty of keeping track of the time of the last update and figuring out how long it has been since the last update, as well as testing challenges for such a feature, inclusion of such a feature in a hardware product is not recommended. (Optional)
"... is not recommended"?? You just have to remember to manually log into your dydns account or manually update your IP address once every 28 days if you want to use a hardware client? That makes no sense to me. But I ascertain since ZyXEL had it working perfectly in ZyNOS they most certainly could do the same with the USG series.

Seems like when I submitted this report a page came up stating something along the lines that they would forward the information to the appropriate department. I was left with the impression they would get back with me.

Nearly five days, and counting....
