When you get the official Sprint tethering support it uses a different Network Access Identifier so even though it's one physical device, the network tracks the phone and tethering usage separately. When you root the phone, you can get tethering apps that will proxy your Internet traffic using the phone's NAI, so the system counts all traffic as originating from the phone.

Beautiful (though I realize the risk if the sheer volume of the traffic triggers Sprint's alarm bells). Do I have the same level of protection if I use a tethering ap which does NOT require rooting, like Easy Tether and PDA Net? In other words, do Easy Tether and/or PDA Net also proxy my Internet traffic using the phone's NAI, so the system would still count all traffic as apparently originating from the phone?
