These forums aren't designed with Web 2.0 in mind and I think it should stay that way. These forums are quick and efficient. Too much javascript would compromise that. What I enjoy about the current page-based image is that if there are several images, I can quick fire middle click them to get them up in separate tabs of my browser. -- --Kradorex Xeron [an error occurred while processing this signature] |

a) Any computer built in the last 7 years would not have an issue with it. If you go the link above, it will show how fast the images can pop up. I dare say its even faster because you don't have to go that horrible intermediate page.
b) Right click open still works fine and again is even faster than here. -- ~ Insert a Funny Sig Here ~ |

a) Any computer built in the last 7 years would not have an issue with it. If you go the link above, it will show how fast the images can pop up. I dare say its even faster because you don't have to go that horrible intermediate page. There are many people who have javascript disabled, even on modern systems. Such people should not be obligated to enable it just to view images that traditional HTML already provides adequate facilities to display. While javascript-based solution may work on another site, I don't feel it works here.
The problem isn't that computers cannot handle it, it's "why they should have to". Every computer can do 3D graphics, should forums have spinning cubes for page transitions, or every thread being in a separate room on an FPS style arrangement?
said by PhoenixDown:b) Right click open still works fine and again is even faster than here. Middle click, not right click, on many browsers, middle clicking a link activates a new tab with that link's target.
A third problem I can cite with lightboxes is that they take over the page and reduce the ability to quickly open an image containing say, a screenshot in another tab, then flicking back and forth between the thread and the image as a reference, or opening the image in another window. While you can right click the image and so forth, it's much slower.
My objection stands. -- --Kradorex Xeron [an error occurred while processing this signature] |

Using the site I mentioned as the example, if you have javascript disabled - clicking on the link will open the picture in a new tab just like you wanted.

Because we don't live in the stone age of computing? This is a site about technology, shouldn't we embrace it?
quote: Middle click, not right click,
Never, ever, used it. But middle clicking also works. Again try it for yourself.

Again, with the light box in the example you can do this.

So it seems your concerns are adequately addressed. There is no down side for people wishing to retain existing functionality but plenty of enhancements making the effort worthwhile for those that do. -- ~ Insert a Funny Sig Here ~ |

WeirdalPremium join:2003-06-28 Lincoln, NE kudos:17 | reply to PhoenixDown Just get rid of the silly gallery page altogether and link directly to the image. Lightboxes are stupid because when I click an image, I want to go directly to the full image. I'm already using the large thumbnail view, I don't need to view slightly larger thumbnails that I have to click yet again to finally view the full image. -- »[Info] The DSLR Orangeface extension 2.0! |
