Emissions testing..

I picked up a second vehicle, I expected some repairs for the price I paid for it. I put a new alternator and battery in that took care of the check engine light. I replaced a passenger wheel hub assembly which includes the abs sensor. I'm still throwing an abs light. I haven't got my notice yet but I expect it soon. Will an abs dummy light fail me?

I don't see why. All they care about is emissions. Whether or not you can stop is your problem.

None of my vehicles have ever thrown codes so this is new to me. My understanding is if you have a check engine thats an auto fail. I've got the abs issue which I know has nothing to do with the other, just trying to cover my bases.

I think you nailed it right there. The Onboard Diag system is linked to the "Check Engine" light. If another light is on, I don't think it will cause a problem. But I agree, no one wants to have to go back to the testing facility more than once

I don't know if it is or not. If that's true, it's stupid. There's a million thing that can make that light go on that have nothing to do with emissions.

I had the same understanding....idiot light = auto fail.

Then again I always thought it was stupid that they had me taking my Insight hyrbid ULEV in for an emissions test in the first place.

As I understand it, any of the following can cause an emissions test failure:

1) Engine MIL on
2) Engine MIL non-functional (burned out / disconnected / covered so you don't see it)
3) An emissions code set in the on-board computer.
4) The computer has been reset within X amount of time ( I don't remember the exact amount off the top of my head)

Note: MIL = Malfunction Indicator Light. This can be called different things on different vehicles, IE "Service Engine Soon" or "Check Engine". Some vehicles have a "Service Vehicle Soon" light which is not the same. It is for things like Oil changes, ABS, and other non-emissions related items.

Yeah, those lights can be goofy. Mine comes on now and then on my '97 sonoma for the past 6 years and I continue to pass emissions. The light of course is off during the test.

Mine has come on and gone off a few times as well and I've passed too.
Plus on the report it shows no stored error codes so who the hell knows why it's coming on.

Exactly what mine does. I was expecting stored error codes but nothing, lol.

If the light goes out by itself (without resetting the computer), then the code that was stored in the computer has cleared, and the issue that caused the light to come on and the code to be set has cleared up.

Sometimes a wet or loose connection on a plug or a bad ground can cause a code to be set and the light to be on, but once the connection dries up or gets bounced around so that the connection is satisfactory, the the issue no longer exists and the code will clear itself.

My minivan has just this sort of issue. It has never failed a test, but a couple of times the light has come on, just to go out again the next day.

From a thread about 6 weeks ago...

My emissions test saga.

Plates expired 8/31. Forgot - too damn busy. Run out to 99th and King Dr. "Can't get the sticker till you do the emissions test."

Doh! Done plumb fergot.

So - schlep out to 73rd near Central to get the test. Car running great - never a problem. But wait! Check engine light is on! Oh no! But I was almost there so I gave it a shot. Flunked. Of course.

So, off to the mechanic. Replace oxygen sensor. Back to the emissions test place. Flunked again! Takes almost 24 hours for the car computer to re-set.

Finally passed today. Started at 49th and Greenwood. Off on LSD to I-55 to Cicero, to 73rd St. to Leamington. Pass test. Then on up Cicero in late PM traffic to 87th, east on 87th to King Dr., get my flippin sticker, and then back to Hyde Park. The great circuit of the South side. Exhausted.

I was throwing an airbag light. After some googleing I found out it was a bad connection in a wiring harness underneath the drivers seat . I should have mentioned I'm also throwing a "service traction system" which I think is related to the abs. Traction control is automatically disabled (which I have no problem with). Damn car and all its electronics.

as long as it isn't a check engine light, you are ok. I've had everything blinking but the check engine light and never had a problem. these are Fords I am talking about, so it may change from manufacturer to manufacturer.

PS ... I would make sure you wait a week or so just to make sure that old code has cleared as well as any reset codes. I think the minimum time frame is 48 hrs, don't quote me on that though. I wait for at least one week and never had an issue.

good luck!

Exactly - I actually passed after waiting about 24 hours, but I jumped the gun and tried after 12 and it still had the old code.
