Viatalk Cheated - Beware and check your bill

I was a long time VT customer but in last couple of months my account is hacked and made tonnes of international calls to countries I don't call. VT was keep saying it went from my router and from my IP address so I have to pay for all that calls . While I opened a ticket and waiting for some logs from VT server team to prove calls went from my router they pulled the money from my CC. They are keep mentioning my network don't have enough security even though I had all kinds of security in my router and logging all the details through a Syslog server. I did not see any activity at all on my router. I know this because I'm basically a network engineer too. I don't know how long I have to fight to get my money back. Anyways I just want to let everyone know beware of VT and check your bills every month. Their customer service is very bad like all other telco providers when it comes to billing and money. If you have other options please go with them than going with VT.

What are you running? Are you using an ATA or ATA byod or say an asterisks or freeswitch setup.

Are your passwords for SIP and account access strong or weak?

Other stuff but start here until know if ata or your own other setup.

ATA BYOD, Cisco UC520 . It is strong password, I've been changing passwords for my router every week now.

Would it matter if you disabled international calls via the control panel or is there some other parameter when you have BYOD?

I left enabled on VT control panel because we make at least one or two calls every day. so I did not Disable that in control panel.

I had a code to lock international calls so kids can't just dial from my home phone. All I can say is if you can get away from them just do it.

Based on this, why would we leave them if they are all bad?

Hacking ATAs happens, and it is a sign of less-than-optimal network security. I, for one, refuse to put the ATA in a DMZ or on a public IP. Not to blame the victim, assuming you got scammed, but the same could occur if your debit card was stolen and money was withdrawn with your PIN. You would have a hard time proving it wasn't you, and the only word of advice would be "be more careful next time."

Good luck! And yes, more details would help us assess what you may need to do differently. We are all "basically network engineers" in here.

Understood what kind of prrof you are looking for. Call logs or my router logs. VT provided their stripped down version of server log that has nothing useful on it.
