AtlanticBB YouTube/Google Cache Server

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that today I discovered that ABB is hosting some sort of Google cache server on their network.

I was loading a youtube video earlier, and noticed an odd hostname: o-o.preferred.atlanticbb-aoo1.v18.lscache6.c.youtube.com , which not only mentions ABB (and the Altoona exchange name), but also resolves back to a 207.255.26.84, a static IP on the ABB network.

traceroute to o-o.preferred.atlanticbb-aoo1.v18.lscache6.c.youtube.com (207.255.26.84), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1 10.0.0.1 (10.0.0.1) 0.915 ms 0.615 ms 0.477 ms
 2 10.144.0.1 (10.144.0.1) 12.563 ms 13.260 ms 13.161 ms
 3 172.25.12.1 (172.25.12.1) 13.162 ms 14.024 ms 13.897 ms
 4 172.25.0.5 (172.25.0.5) 14.713 ms 14.759 ms 14.686 ms
 5 172.25.0.133 (172.25.0.133) 13.463 ms 14.143 ms 14.195 ms
 6 207-255-26-084-static.jst.pa.atlanticbb.net (207.255.26.84) 13.077 ms 20.431 ms 21.097 ms

I'm not sure if this is local to my area (possibly because Johnstown is the Main HQ for ABB), or if other areas will have their own.

Also, if you go to the page itself, it shows a Google homepage and search: »207.255.26.84

That search page also seems VERY speedy, probably due to the lack of latency, and also the lack of traffic utilizing it.

Has anyone else ever heard of this being done on this ISP or any other before?

Also, feel free to chime in on your youtube experiences, and if you are tech savvy, maybe load up some youtube content yourself, and see what server you are streaming content from.

Starting on 10/17, I've been unable to view you tube videos, synch chrome bookmarks or download or update apps from the Android Market on my tablet. All three of which are google related items.

This issue happens if I'm on my home wireless (ABB) or on my work (ABB). Two of my co-workers are also having the exact same issues on their android phones. Their home networks are also with ABB.

If I take the tablet to a wireless spot not provided by ABB, everything works fine.

On the ABB networks each device can cruise the net and download items manually but nothing google related except for gmail will work.

The two common threads are ABB and Google. Do you think this cache server of theirs may be affecting it? I've spoken only once with a tech and although nice, was not very helpful and I'm scouring the net trying to find anything I can.

It's possible. I've noticed YouTube has been a little slow on my end lately to do the initial load.

What part of Johnstown you in?

And what are the speed packages you have at home and work?

Hey, we're up in Richland.

A quick speedtest to MD is 8.86 DL and 4.81 UL but this is at work and although we've just had fiber optic put in we're a security monitoring center and very heavy real-time video monitoring for number of sites.

Don't recall what I'm getting at home atm.

I am in Johnstown and having the same problem. I put in a phone call. Did anyone else call? I tried a different DNS and still had the same problem.

holy crap, that's so stupid.

at least if they're going to do that to help provide performance it needs to work 100% of the time. I HATE this ISP and I'm glad I moved to Ligonier and switched to comcast business.

I would pound their helpdesk with calls, it's unlikely they will do anything until everyone calls 100 times.

Over ABB (via WiFi), I'm able to browse the Market, but not download stuff on Android.

I'm located in the West End of Johnstown.

There's definitely *SOMETHING* going on here, but it's hard to know without knowing enough about Google and the Android Market; knowing where/how they communicate (as far as IPs/Ports/Protocols/etc.)

UPDATE:

Noticed this on my router...

tcp 6 118 SYN_SENT src= dst=207.255.26.88 sport=55238 dport=80 packets=1 bytes=60 [UNREPLIED] src=207.255.26.88 dst= sport=80 dport=55238 packets=0 bytes=0 mark=0 use=2

This looks like it could potentially be another cache server?

Also, I noticed the above mentioned Google Cache server is NOT responding to requests anymore.

Somethings going on. Has anyone called in yet?

I've called twice and was told the last time that it may be due to Google switching routes and not informing all ISPs. I'm to call back during business hours to speak with a supervisor about having "Tier 3" look at it.

I can't begin to list the steps I've taken trouble shooting this. I have called and suggest anyone with the same thing call. I'm telling ya...one voice ain't getting heard.

I called yesterday and spoke to someone as well.

They are supposed to be passing the information I gave them (hostnames, IP addresses, and problem descriptions) to their Network Engineer, and give me a call back sometime next week, most likely on Monday they said.

The first person (level 1) that I talked to was extremely rude and inconsiderate. I was on the phone with them for less than 5 minutes before they irritated me and I said I want to speak to someone more knowledgeable on this issue.

Yeah, the second guy I got wouldn't let me talk for four minutes as he blamed my tablet, settings, router, it's settings, the market and Google before hearing me out. Then suggesting I call a supervisor.

First guy I got actually did try to help though.

Thanks for your efforts, I'm not savy enough to have those specs to pin them to looking further than just brushing me off.

I called and they told me that he would forward the case to a network engineer.

@rak3187 I don't think it is anything we can change on our end. They have something messed up on their end.

As of 1300 everything seems to be up and running again. The downloads and updates from the markets are working again.

Yup. I just got a call back. Android Market seems okay.

Youtube seems better as well.

I noticed those IP addresses/servers are now back up.

If you guys ever have another technical issue like this and need someone to call in with technical details to set them straight, let me know. I don't put up with anyone's bullsh*t answers when I can prove there's a problem

Seriously can't say thanks enough. I wasn't getting nothing but hoops to jump through. Thanks!
