Depends on where they sit and what they know. If you're out looking right now, about 25% less then what you were getting three years ago.

As others have said you may be able to get a little more from your brother since you do the IT work, but since it is a part time gig and I don't know if it is done properly (a BIG) deal, I can't give you an amount. I Worked for a company that asked me if I could run and terminate cable. I asked why. They said that they frequently had issues. Told them in my experience that cables didn't just go bad. Found out later, after I was hired, that they ran all of the wire in a 200,000 square foot warehouse in a weekend. Forget about standards, I was lucky anything worked. All of my switches were 40 feet in the air.

Same thing applies to network shares and accounts. There is a right way and a wrong way to do things.

Are things documented? If you left how hard would it be to maintain what is in place? If it would be difficult, then you aren't doing the IT job.

like any other job ... especially when unions are not involved ... you are in control of your own destiny.

At the end of the day ..its your wallet and your bank account. If you feel you should make more money ..dont be a boob about it. After all ..it is your brother. If you can't be frank with tact with him ...then you have no business asking for a raise from anyone else.

With only 6 people working though ... I wouldn't ask for too much.

The trick is framing the discussion in a way to where your ideas become your brothers.

Most companies around here charge between $120 to $150 per hour for that kind of work, or less if you sign a retainer with a managed service provider. You would also be looking at anywhere between $30-$60k per year for a junior systems administrator position. I wouldn't expect much from a small company, although I would at least push for cost of living adjustments. Be careful, you don't want to negotiate your way out of a job in this economy!

If you honestly think you are not being paid enough, you should consider looking for a new job. Your chances for success are much higher while being employed. Just be ready with a list of accomplishments that you can use to "sell" yourself to another firm. The worst that happens is that the job market comes back telling you that you aren't worth what you think you are.

+1 on the cost. When I was doing consulting I was billed at 120~150 per hour. I don't know if there was a trip charge though.

I got my .55 per mile so that's all that mattered to me.

Dave

EDIT. I removed the K from 150. Ooops.

Again depends...

If you know THEORY and can THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX then maybe $100/hour if you can do it 100% perfectly.

Average is $20-35.

Right now I'm underpaid but get to wear whatever I want to work (its a start-up type of place).

And yes i learned asterisk in 3 weeks...

Then again this is a BIG COLLEGE TOWN so they like semi disposable college students who know theory and have the guts to do it... (It's not a average place)...

That's life...

if you're only getting average pay for the brokerage side of your job just ask for an extra 10-15k for IT assuming you dont need to babysit the servers (and if you do then you have problems).

i think 90% of these posts completely missed the point and philosophy behind the OT. he wants a raise to offset what he's not getting paid for keeping the IT in check but less than what his brother would have to pay for a contractor to do it.

OP, I feel for you...

coming from a family business background my self, all the advice you got right now is cute but misses a large portion of your issue. It's a family business... could be a walk in the park, could be loosing your job and creating major tension on the family relationships...

Sorry man, it's a tough one.

In terms of what money the business has saved because of you, you could keep track of what you've done in the last month or so and get some quotes from local business.... if it helps you get a clear picture.

best wishes

The amount of time spent on this type of work is not always relevant. The only relevant info here is what the responsibilities are. You may work at a company where all the employees work 9 - 5, but I am willing to bet that all the employees are not paid the same amount.

I dont know it seems to me a six people network with a mail server, and phone service really isnt worth that much. Sorry, but in my opinion be glad you have a job. Congrats on the 150 percent sales of your wages but remember all the expenses your brother has on that 150 percent. I doubt very much that there is much room for raises. WELCOME TO THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY.

Do you enjoy where you work?

At this moment in time where I am working I am about 15 to 20K a year under paid. Not complaining still taking home well over 70K a year as a single person... (small to medium company)

But I love the fact I can take off mid day if I want... I can wear what ever I want (almost)... And most of all I really enjoy the people and customers I am dealing with every day...

I think most people in this day and age wear many hats at work... There are days at the office where I feel more like a therapist / baby sitter than I do an IT person... Just the way it goes.... Our receptionist has days where she should be asking for extra money because she lands up doing janitor work...

It's a fact of life these days... six of one, half dozen of the other...

Have a great day.

Regards,

Joshb....

Until you get a new boss that says your worth more. There is always another boss would will value you more. It's just about what your willing to do or sacrifice to get it.

If I'd only sold 1.5 times my salary at IBM, I'd have been fired. My rep and I had an eight figure quota for hardware, software and services, and we exceeded it every year I was on the team.

QFT.

Fully loaded cost of an employee is usually between 30%-40% above the salary figure. Assuming the lower figure, you bring in less than 20% of your salary in gross profit.
