RemyM join:2005-02-14 Stamford, CT | New international channels Cablevision continues to expand their subscription international offerings. And why wouldn't they, it's the perfect a-la-carte model and it's sent using SDV. They only have to pay for people who subscribe to it and only those that subscribe to it have to pay for it. We would have every channel we want if they could do that with everything. It might not be cheaper but you could choose what you wanted.
From the CT PURA filing:

 | reply to RemyM Im all for the system you mention except for the Switched Digital Video part. Not a fan of it and until they perfect it I want it as far away as possible from channels I get. The fact that some of the SHowtime and STarz channels are transmitted on SDV is ridiculous. Paying 9.99 extra and getting "channel temporarily not available messages" is no way to run a business. |
RemyM join:2005-02-14 Stamford, CT | After your system switches to all digital the premium movie channels will move off of SDV. I wasn't advocating them increasing the use of SDV for regular channels, just pointing out another reason why they can add more international channels. |

As a EuroNews and BBC World Service junkie, I would love a package that contained English-language channels from around the world. |
 | I thought I was the only one who watches Euronews ! Its a fantastic news service and gives you such a unique perspective on the world with far less bias than things like CNN and Fox News. Its interesting to watch news that isnt "dumbed-down", politicized or sensationalized like the news from America is. Kudos to Cablevision for carrying this channel. My understanding is they are the only operator in America who does. |

That's the channel that keeps me with Cablevision, because no one else seems to carry it. It's so refreshing to watch a channel that hasn't sold out its journalistic soul to any American political party, and one that regularly reports science, space, art and tech stories in addition to world news; one that also seems to grasp the interconnectivity of the global economy and does not fill its airtime with entertainment faux news.
Between that channel and the BBC World Service channel, it really makes me aware of how much of what is currently going on in the world never makes it onto the US news media, until that is, everything goes to hell in a handbasket and they can no longer avoid reporting the story. -- Patriotism is not waving a flag, it is living the ideals

drofli join:2004-02-22 Lakewood, NJ | reply to RemyM Why is it that English language channels have Spanish closed captions available and virtually no Spanish channels have English closed captions? |
 | Because they don't care/want to have English viewers. It's obviously geared toward hispanics only. Just another one of many double standards, I say pull all non-english captions much less get rid of all the non-english international channel garbage they've been added alot of recently and use it for english channels that we've all been requesting for months and even years. |
 | I'm not sure if you're serious, so I don't know how to respond to that.
You don't pay for these extra international channels. They are part of an individual package that only people who subscribe to it have to pay for. So if they cut the channel and then they lose subscribers as a result, they aren't going to suddenly get more money to use for other channels. |
 | Actually I am serious. Regardless of whether I'm paying for it, it's still taking up bandwidth and channel space regardless of whether it's on SDV or not. Especially since those are being added to digital/analog systems while we no longer have room supposed for HD feeds. |
 | reply to RemyM channels 200-299 isn't enough international channels?. i hate having to skip over them to get to HBO.. |
